Box Score CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team improved to 4-0 on Saturday after a 3-2 victory over Delta State University. The Blazers are now the lone undefeated team in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
"This was a great matchup the entire game because they had a resilient team. It really could have gone either way," Head Coach
Josue Sabillon said. "I am tremendously pleased with the way our team responded today."
Belhaven started the scoring when senior
Jordan Organ found the back of the net for the third time this season less than seven minutes into the match. After Delta State's Lauren May scored 31 seconds later, the goals were over for the duration of the first half.
Eight minutes into the second half, Organ was on the other side of a Belhaven goal, assisting freshman
Hana Jeong. Jeong, a redshirt in 2012, was able to sneak a ball past Delta State goalie Kelsey Elling for the first goal of her collegiate career. Six minutes later, May struck again for the Lady Statesmen, tying the score for the second time in the game.
"This season, we have had a great team mentality," Sabillon said. "Everyone is willing to play their role, even if it is just for a few minutes at a time."
In the 86th minute, sophomore
Laura Quintero received her first assist of the season when junior
Kaylie Kingsbury fired the shot that ended up being the game winner. In her second straight start, freshman
Isabelle Granlund had two impressive saves that proved to be the difference in the game.
Defensively,
Morgan Lott, a former defender for the Lady Statesmen, played her best game according to her head coach.
"The girls are really buying in, and I'm very proud of the way they are believing in themselves," Sabillon said. "It has been a lot of grit, grind, and determination that has gotten us to this point."
The Blazers outshot Delta 13-12 on the afternoon. May paced Delta State with six total shots in the game.
Belhaven will be back in action Wednesday against cross town rival Millsaps College at 6:00 PM.
