Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team suffered their first setback of the season on Friday night, a Southern States Athletic Conference-opening 1-0 loss to Emmanuel College. The Blazers are now 6-1 overall.
"It would have been nice to maintain the undefeated season and start conference with a win," Head Coach
Josue Sabillon said. "We had high spirits coming into this game, and our girls played their hearts out."
The Blazers outshot the Lions 17-11, and senior
Kaylie Kingsbury took five of those. Emmanuel goalkeeper Cyara Castillo posted an astonishing nine saves, while Belhaven keeper
Isabelle Granlund tallied five.
Unfortunately, one Emmanuel (4-1-1, 1-0 SSAC) shot made it past Granlund for the game winner. Emmanuel's Allison Edenfield tucked a shot into the corner of the net as the first half was winding down. Emma Tamblyn threaded the pass through the Blazers defense setting up Edenfield for the strike.
In a game highlighted largely by the weather and playing conditions on the field, Sabillon feels the rain had little to do with the outcome.
"If we don't capitalize on our opportunities, it can come back to hurt us, and that's what happened tonight," Sabillon said. "Our team is hungry for tomorrow, and I'm looking forward to seeing them bounce back."
The Blazers host the Southern Wesleyan on Saturday. The match is set for 5:00 pm at H.T. Newell Field.
