Box Score NEW ORLEANS, La. – The Belhaven women's basketball team improved to 2-1 on the season with a 67-61 victory Monday night against Dillard University (0-1). The Blazers were able to withstand a hostile road crowd and a late surge from the Lady Bleu Devils.
The Blazers'
Erika LeFlore won the opening tip, freshman
Ariel Wilson scored the first bucket of the game, and Dillard's guest wouldn't relinquish their lead for the rest of the night. The Lady Bleu Devils would make a late push, however, a situation Belhaven has already seen once this season.
"We gave away our first game of the year by letting a team come back on us, so we grew up some tonight," Head Coach Rusty Cram said. "To pick up a win on the road in this kind of environment, I'm very proud of this team."
Freshman
Ariel Wilson followed her 22-point performance in Friday's game with a 24-point night on Monday to lead all scorers for the second consecutive game.
"We knew when we signed her what she was going to mean to us," Cram said. "Her best days are still ahead of her."
Senior forward
Erika LeFlore followed with 15 points, while pulling down eight rebounds. Freshman
Candler Gregory added 11 points, while junior
TaShayla Steede finished her night with a game-best 15 rebounds.
Brittany Smith and Keona Favis led the offensive attack for Dillard, chiming in 11 points apiece, while Julia Hendrieth grabbed seven rebounds. The Blazers took the battle on the glass by a total of 52-38.
Belhaven shot 17-29 at the charity stripe, while the Lady Blue Devils went 11-17. One of the key differences in the game came from beyond the arc, as the Blazers 80% easily bested Dillard's 12%.
The Blazers saw a 17-point lead diminish to just four with under two minutes to play, the visitors were able to hold on for their second victory of the young season.
"It may be driving my blood pressure up, but I love these teams pressuring us right now," Cram said. "We're getting better, and we will be prepared for the games that count.
Belhaven will return to action on November 12th, when they will host Tougaloo College at Rugg Arena. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 pm.
"I saw some great things out there tonight," Cram said. "Hopefully we can carry those over and produce a successful season."
