Redhawks Best Blazers in Double Overtime

Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Saturday's Southern States Athletic Conference Championship match ended up having the same script as Belhaven and Martin Methodist's regular season meeting October 19th in Jackson, Mississippi. Just like that night in October, the Blazers fell 1-0 in double overtime to the Redhawks on a goal in the 108th minute. Martin Methodist used a perfect corner kick in both to secure the wins.

"As a coach I can't be anything but proud of the guys," said Belhaven Head Coach Brian McMahon. "Soccer is a cruel game and we had some chances tonight, but Martin Methodist made the most of theirs. They are very difficult to stop on set pieces and credit to them for making it count in the end. Again, I'm proud of the effort our players gave and there is a lot to be said of the character of this team."

Belhaven (14-6-1) had some opportunities to score, especially in the second half when they took three shots on goal. Then in the 96th minute, senior Will Monsour had what arguably was the best look of the night. Monsour made his way into the box and unloaded a solid strike against goalkeeper Stephen Lunney who dove to his right to make the save. It was Lunney's five save of the match and it kept it a scoreless contest.

Martin Methodist (14-3-1) then claimed the win in the 108th minute off the corner kick. Felix Kristofferson setup in the left corner and lobbed the ball into the right side of the box. Nicholas Romero was waiting, leaping into the air he headed the ball past goalie Carl Blundell into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 victory.

Victor France led the Belhaven offense with seven shots, including three on goal. Monsour ended the night with four total shots. The Blazers had a 19-18 edge on total shot attempts and both clubs were even when it came to shots on goal at 5-5. Blundell and Lunney each made five saves defensively. Romero, who delivered the game winner, also paced the Redhawks with seven shots in the match.

The Blazers will now wait and see if they get into the NAIA National Championship Tournament with an at-large bid. The final regular season NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, the final Modified Ratings Percentage Index (MRPI) and the 32 national championship qualifiers will be announced at 7:30 p.m. CST Sunday night.

"There have been a lot of upsets in conference tournaments across the country so we'll have to wait and see what happens with the at large bids," McMahon said.
