Box Score JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team suffered their third Southern States Athletic Conference loss with a 5-2 setback at H.T. Newell Field on Wednesday. The Blazers are now 8-3 overall and 2-3 in conference play, while their Spring Hill counterparts have improved to 9-2 on the year and 4-1 in the SSAC.
The Blazers fell behind 2-0 early, with both goals coming from Spring Hill's Sidi Genus. Belhaven's
Chelsea Smith responded in the 59th minute by finding the back of the net for the first time this season, cutting the Badger lead in half. Less than 14 minutes later, teammates
Ashley Ventura and
Jordan Organ connected to tie the game.
"I really thought we were the aggressors tonight. The opportunities were there," Head Coach
Josue Sabillon said. "If you don't get your wins at home, you create a steep road ahead, so our backs are against the wall now."
Spring Hill's Lauren Clement launched a free kick from 55 yards out to give the visitors a 3-2 lead that wouldn't be relinquished. Hannah Michael and Tatiana Gonzalez squashed any hopes of a Belhaven rally, adding a goal apiece for the Badgers.
Belhaven outshot their guests 26 to 18 while winning the battle of corner kicks 4-2, but the home team proved unable to overcome eight saves from Badger goalie Abby Massengale.
Following each of the Blazers' previous two losses, the team responded with a victory in their next match, a scenario Sabillon believes can be achieved once again.
"This is really a hard one to bear because we want to stay in the hunt for the postseason," Sabillon said. "This team has a break through mentality, so I know we can rebound."
The Blazers hit the road Saturday to take on the University of Mobile. The match is set to begin at 5:00 pm.
