Glenny Leads Blazers to Victory

Box Score JACKSON, Miss. - The Belhaven women's soccer team (9-4, 3-4 SSAC) picked up a key Southern States Athletic Conference victory on Friday afternoon at H.T. Newell Field. While most around campus were finishing their lunch break, the Blazers were busy defeating Bethel (3-8, 2-4 SSAC) by a final score of 2-1.

"The girls were hungry, ready, and we were the aggressors today," Belhaven Head Coach Josue Sabillon said. "We knew how critical this game was in order to stay in the hunt for the postseason, and it worked out in our favor."

The first goal of the match came with two minutes remaining in the first half, when leading scorer Fran Glenny found the back of net for eighth time this season. Once the on-field celebration concluded, Glenny quickly went back to work.

Belhaven took a 2-0 lead into the break after the Australian freshman bounced a second shot past Wildcat keeper Savana Smothers just 23 seconds after the first. Jordan Organ received credit for her third assist of the season to tie her for the team lead. Glenny has now scored at least one goal in each of the Blazers' last three wins.

"She shot low while framing the far post," Sabillon said. "Fran was huge, and the team needed that."

When Belhaven keeper Isabelle Granlund was forced out of the net midway through the second half, Bethel's Melissia Madden took advantage and cut the home team's lead in half. Madden's goal was assisted by Katy Hemmingway, but that would be the lone mistake by the Blazers.

The Wildcats were outshot 34-5 and lost the battle of corner kicks by a total of 3-0. Granlund finished her day with two saves, while Smothers countered with an impressive 13.

Belhaven returns to action on Saturday, when they play host to 9th ranked Martin Methodist. The match is set to begin at 5:00 at H.T. Newell field, and the Blazers will honor their eight seniors in their final home game.

"I wish we had more to show than two goals from this game, but this win gives us confidence," Sabillon said. "If these girls can leave it all on the line and pick up another win, tomorrow night can be truly special."
