Blazers Notch Convincing SSAC Victory over Brewton-Parker

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball rebounded from a Friday night loss in a big way, with a dominating performance over the visiting Lady Barons of Brewton-Parker College. An evenly-distributed Blazers' attack gave them a 17 point halftime lead before they pulled away in the second half to beat the Lady Barons 80-54 on Saturday.

The Blazers team that showed up on Saturday was almost unrecognizable compared to the one that played less than 24 hours previous. Belhaven looked cool and collected on the floor, confident in their abilities to score early and often to put the Lady Barons in an early hole.

The game got off to a fast start with Ashley Wakefield draining two long three-point attempts to give the Blazers a 10-4 lead to start. The rest of her teammates followed suit on route to an exhilarating first half effort, when the Blazers put together a textbook offensive clinic.

Passes were crisp and shots had a confident feel to them as the Blazers put long spurts of scoring together in the early going.

A team that struggled to put the ball in the basket against the No. 6 team in the country the night before looked like a team that could have challenged any team on Saturday. A huge reason for that were the senior leaders for Belhaven taking the team on their back, as the team jumped out to an early lead.

Only moments after Wakefield hit her second straight three-point shot, Sarah Carr hit a long triple of her own to extend the Blazer lead to nine points.

Carr and Wakefield were the two best shooters from behind the arch for the Blazers, but both have been streaky at best throughout the early part of the season.

However, when the Blazers needed a big shot on Saturday, they knew that they could turn to either one of their senior sharp shooters.

Fellow senior and starting point guard, Alisha Rayborn, was one of the main catalysts on the offensive end, as she set up all three of the early triples made by the Blazers. Rayborn finished with five assists and six rebounds, which put her among the team leaders in both categories for the game.

As sharp as Belhaven looked in the first half, the Blazers came out in the second looking even better. They scored five points in the first 25 seconds of the half to extend their lead to 44-22 and demoralizing the Lady Barons from even thinking about a realistic comeback.

After quickly extending the lead, the starting five for Belhaven allowed four offensive rebounds on one possession for the Lady Barons and were immediately mass substituted to prove a point. No matter what the circumstances are, it takes 40 minute performances to win consistently in the SSAC.

Belhaven was able to put together that type of performance on Saturday.

Belhaven (6-9, 3-3 SSAC) was led by Ashley Wakefield with 18 points and five rebounds followed by TaShayla Steede with 12 points and seven boards. Erika Leflore rounded out the double digit scorers with 11 points in the contest. Alisha Rayborn dished out five assists and came up with three steals.

Brewton-Parker (5-8, 0-5 SSAC) had a team 16 points off the bench from Ima Petion with Crystal Nwaopara and Brianna Webb chipping in 13 and 12 points respectively. Nwaopara and Andriea Hoskins hauled down a game high nine rebounds.

The Blazers will be back in action on Thursday evening when the Spring Hill Badgers come into town for another SSAC showdown. Tip-off is a 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by the men's game at 7:30.
