JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven baseball team used solid pitching and timely hitting Friday night leading to a 4-1 win over Blue Mountain College in the 2013 season opener at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers scored three in the second and one in the eighth to secure the victory. Pitchers

Belhaven (1-0) strung together three consecutive hits to start the second after Beau Cummings retired the Blazers in order in the first. Junior right fielder
Caleb Baucum opened the second with a single to center followed by a double from senior catcher
Kyle Wheeler putting runners on second and third. Senior third baseman
Bud Britt followed with a three run home run that cleared the wall in left field.
Good cruised through the first five innings and then ran into a bit of trouble in the sixth. Trae Allison broke up a no hitter, collecting a single for Blue Mountain (0-1) with one out in the sixth. Ben Wallis then reached on an error by shortstop
Daniel Gilbert putting runners at first and second. Following a fielder's choice off the bat of Gardner Richey, Will Wallis doubled down the left field line sending home Allison from third base while placing runners on second and third. Good continued to battle and induced a groundout to shortstop by Zac Scott to end the inning and keep it a 3-1 game.
The Blazers tacked on their insurance run in the eighth inning thanks to a pair of doubles. Wheeler ripped a double over the head of left fielder Matt Roberts with one out and then Britt picked up his fourth RBI of the game with a two bagger down the left field line. Courtesy runner

Senior
Robert Marzoni, who had come in to pitch in the seventh, retired the Toppers in order in the ninth notching his first save of the year. Marzoni picked up where Good left off and then worked in and out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning. Marzoni walked the first two hitters he faced, but retired the next three hitters to keep Blue Mountain off the board.
Britt led Belhaven at the plate, going 3 for 3 with two doubles and a home run. He was responsible for all four of Belhaven's runs. Sophomore first baseman
Hamilton Harper was also 3 for 3 followed by Wheeler who collected two doubles in four trips to the plate. Bacaum finished the night 1 for 4 with a run scored.
Good (1-0) tossed six innings in his Blazer debut, allowing one unearned run on just two hits leading to his first win of the season. He walked one and struck out four in the contest. Marzoni covered three innings of scoreless and hitless baseball. He walked two and struck out five.
Allison and Will Wallis had the only hits for Blue Mountain while Wallis was credited with the only RBI. Cummings (0-1) suffered the loss on the hill after surrendering three runs on six hits. Sam Cruse was charged with one run on three hits in two innings of work.
Belhaven will conclude its brief two game series with Blue Mountain on Saturday at Smith-Wills Stadium beginning at 2:00 PM.
