MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Belhaven women's basketball team could not overcome an evenly-distributed attack from the No. 21 ranked team Auburn-Montgomery, falling to the Lady Warhawks 61-44 on the road in Southern States Athletic Conference play Saturday afternoon.
Belhaven came into the game looking for a spark following a tough loss against SSAC West rival Mobile on Thursday evening and seemed find one early on in the contest.
After a sluggish start by both offenses, the Blazers put a rally together to take a 16-11 lead with less than eight minutes remaining in the first half. Belhaven once again used second-chance points created by Erika Leflore and
Sierra Cavitt to counteract a tough shooting afternoon. The two forwards were key in grabbing the early lead for Belhaven.
However, momentum quickly swung the other way as the Warhawks found their shooting touch in the final minutes of the first stanza, outscoring Belhaven 21-7 over the final seven minutes. The huge run by AUM left the Blazers staring a nine-point deficit in the face at halftime.
The Warhawks offensive spurt was led by reserve forward Caitlin Cunningham, who put up nine points in the first half to lead all scorers. Cunningham, a senior, finished the game with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Auburn-Montgomery came out firing in the second half the same way they had ended the first, scoring the first nine points of the half to build up an insurmountable 18-point lead.
Belhaven forward
Ashley Wakefield continued her second half success and put the team on her back for stretches, but her game-high 18 points were not enough to close the double-digit gap. Wakefield was hot from behind the arc once again by making four of the five attempts she had for three points.
Two other Warhawks players joined Cunningham to pull out the 17-point victory over the Blazers, Psachal Maize (14 points) and Katie Williams (17 points), were each pivotal in the result of the contest.
Leflore had another solid game for Belhaven, finishing a rebound and a point short of her second straight double-double.
Sarah Carr fired in eight points and grabbed three rebounds.
Alisha Rayborn added four assists and six rebounds.
The Blazers (7-12, 4-5 SSAC) continue their three-game road trip when they travel to Hattiesburg on Thursday night for another SSAC West matchup with in-state rival William Carey. The Blazers currently sit 1.5 games ahead of the William Carey in the league standings. The tip-off is slated for 5:30 PM.
