Blazers Dropped by Northwood (TX)

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven Women's Soccer team fell at home to Northwood College (TX) 2-1 on Saturday after a late rally from the Lady Knights. The Blazers held a 1-0 lead at the break, but a barrage of shots in the second half led to two goals for the Knights.

Belhaven forward Rebecca Ontero got the scoring started in the middle of the first half off of a long pass from defender Katie McCain. McCain was able to gather the ball around midfield and find a seam in the defense that led to an easy goal for Ontero. The goal was the second on the year for the sophomore.

The Blazer defense held strong in the first half turning away all ten shots that Northwood sent their way.

Northwood came out strong in the second half keeping the ball on their offensive side of the field for much of the first ten minutes. The persistence eventually led to a goal off a free kick for the Lady Knights.

Shenelle Warrick took a kick 25 yards out and powered past goalkeeper Nicole Walsh into the top right corner of the net.

The Lady Knights' attack didn't let up after evening the score. They had two breakaway chances that stayed out of the net because of good defensive play by Ashley Harber and Chelsea DeLeon.

In the final minute, the Blazers had an opportunity to take the lead behind the foot of Jordan Organ, but Northwood goalkeeper Hideka Shikata was able to push the ball above the cross bar.

Immediately following the scoring chance for the Blazers, the Lady Knights were able to launch a ball up field behind the Blazer defense. A foot race ensued and Natalie Carter was able to get control of the ball before putting the clinching goal past a sliding Walsh.

Northwood improves to 3-1 on the season while the Blazers fall to 1-4 through five non-conference matches.

Belhaven is back in action on Tuesday night as the team hosts cross town rival Millsaps College at H.T. Newell Field at 8:00 PM.
