Box Score
JACKSON, Miss – The Belhaven women's soccer team was unable to capitalize on some early scoring chances and allowed three second half goals falling to Brenau University at home on Friday. The Lady Tigers received two goals from each of their forwards, leading Brenau to a 4-1 victory over the Blazers.
The Blazers (4-6) controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, getting pressure on Brenau's impressive sophomore goalkeeper Tori Brown. Belhaven outshot the Lady Tigers (6-2) seven to one over the first 30 minutes of the game, but couldn't put the ball into the net.
Rebecca Ontero had one of the best scoring opportunities early, putting a massive strike on the ball from just outside the 18-yard box. Brown was able to get a finger on the ball and push it over the crossbar to eliminate the threat.
Only minutes later Belhaven threatened to strike first once again.
Laura Quintero corralled a ball that had been cleared out of the goal box and sent it back into the fray.
Ashley Harber was able to out jump the Brenau defender and send a header screaming towards the goal. Unfortunately, the ball was just a fraction too high, hitting the bottom of the cross bar and away from the goal.
Captain
Chelsea DeLeon was injured in the middle of the second half and was not able to return to the match, leaving a hole in the Belhaven defense.
The Lady Tigers were able to find gaps to operate in the reshuffled Blazer defense and peppered a previously untested
Nicole Walsh with shot after shot. Their persistence eventually paid off in the final ten minutes of the first half.
Brenau forward Kayla Madsen was able to find her running mate Esther Anyanwu in front of the net on a cross. Anyanwu tapped the ball past Walsh to take a 1-0 lead into halftime.
Anyanwu was able to record her second goal on the day after gathering a cleared ball by the Lady Tiger defense and splitting through the last defenders for Belhaven. Walsh attempted to come out of the goal to block Anyanwu's attack, but the Brenau forward was able to make her away around Walsh and put the ball into the net.
In the 71st minute Harber was able to connect on another header from Quintero, except this time it found its way past Brown for the Blazers first goal of the day.
With the game back within reach, the Blazers were hoping to keep the pressure on the Brenau defense.
The Lady Tigers had something else in mind. Madsen retrieved a ball off of a Blazer mistake in the middle of the field and blasted a ball from 30 yards away from the goal. The ball hit the bottom of the cross bar and bounced down into the goal to reclaim a two goal lead.
Brenau added another goal from Madsen on a breakaway in the waning minutes to stretch the final score to 4-1.
The Lady Tigers travel to William Carey on Saturday afternoon and attempt to complete an undefeated road trip.
Belhaven has another tough matchup on Saturday at H.T. Newell Field with the No. 2 Lee Flames coming to Jackson. The four-time defending national champions are 6-1 on the year with their lone loss coming against No. 5 Embry-Riddle. Kickoff is slated for 2:00 PM.
