MT. VERNON, Ga. – A road trip is just what the doctor order for a Belhaven women's soccer team that has been looking for a spark in 2012. For the second straight game the Blazers scored three goals, rolling to a 3-1 Southern States Athletic Conference win over Brewton-Parker Saturday afternoon.
Despite starting in the heat of the mid-day sun, the Blazers (4-5, 2-0 SSAC) were able to gain control of the game early and showed a lot of energy out of the gate. It was an energy that Coach
Josue Sabillon had mentioned following Thursday night's 3-0 victory over Emmanuel, which carried Belhaven in that game as well.
The ball spent time on the Blazers offensive side of the field for a majority of the first 10 minutes of the game.
Saje Pernie,
Ashley Harber,
Rebecca Ontero and
Jordan Organ all added shots within the first six minutes to immediately put the pressure on the Baron's defense.
Brewton-Parker (0-8-1) was finally able to break through the Belhaven defense for their lone shot on goal in the first half, forcing goalkeeper
Nicole Walsh to make one of her two saves on the day.
Walsh was able to catch the Barons out of position after the shot, rolling the ball out wide to defender
Chelsea Smith. Smith then found
Loredana Bono up the right side of the field, running past the Brewton-Parker defense.
Bono was able to gather herself, making a move to the right of the 18-yard box before cutting back in to her left. Having shaken her defender, Bono put a left-footed strike on the ball into the back of the net for the first Belhaven goal.
The Blazers continued to pound the Brewton-Parker defense with shot after shot, but goalkeeper Kelsey Rozler and the goal post kept Belhaven out of the net. Rozler totaled 15 saves on the afternoon.
Eventually the Belhaven scoring opportunities led to a second goal in the 28th minute. Freshman
Laura Quintero took a corner kick that found the head of fellow freshman
Ashley Harber as the ball caromed into the net. The goal was the second of which that tandem has connected on in 2012.
The first half ended with Belhaven leading the Lady Barons in shots at 18-1.
The second half started no different then the first, with the Blazers peppering shots from every distance. The attack tested the resolve of Brewton-Parker, forcing Rozler to make keys saves in an effort to keep her squad in the contest.
Belhaven tallied its third and final goal in the 67th minute when
Ashley Ventura found
Jordan Organ on a cross in front of the goal. Organ volleyed the ball off of the pass into the back of the net for her second goal of the year.
The Blazers are now 3-0 on the year when Organ records a goal or assist.
Brewton-Parker had their first opportunity to score in the second half following a foul committed by the Blazers in the 87th minute. The Barons had a free kick a few yards past the 18-yard box. Sierra Moore was able to head the ball past Walsh off of a rebound to cut the deficit to two goals.
It was a little too late for the Barons, as the Blazers were able to run out the final three minutes with little issue.
“It's always exciting to start 2-0 in conference play, especially when you play in one of the toughest conference's in the NAIA,” said Belhaven Assistant Coach Brooke Lincoln. “We were able to score after eight minutes on a goal from
Loredana Bono that gave us the opportunity to set the tone of the game. I feel like we moved the ball around really well and the girls started to understand their role within the system a lot better."
Belhaven out shot Brewton-Parker 39-2 over the course of the game, which is a season high in shots for the Blazers
The Blazers return home after a long road trip to take on conference foe Brenau University next Friday in the Belhaven Bowl at 2:00 PM.
