JACKSON, Tenn. – The Belhaven Women's Soccer team fell to Milligan College 1-0 in the second game of their Tennessee road trip. The Blazers were unable to overcome a second half goal and the absence of their top forward
Rebecca Ontero, who was missing the game due to injury.
Despite only one goal showing up in the final box score both offenses had their fair share of chances to make the game higher scoring. Each defense held strong throughout the first half despite a barrage of shots on each keeper.
Nicole Walsh and her defense was under constant pressure from the Milligan offense but time after time they turned away the Buffaloes' attack.
Milligan goalkeeper Lauren McInturff had her work cut out for her as well, as the Blazers forced her to make four saves in the first half. The Buffaloes bend but don't break defense kept the Blazers out of the back of the net.
The second got off to a fast start as Belhaven forward
Jantzen Oliver, filling in for Ontero, struck a ball that hit off the post and away from the goal. A minute later, midfielder
Laura Quintero also had a nice shot on goal that was stopped my McInturff.
McInturff got the ball quickly up field to Lauren Brewer who pushed a shot past Walsh, a goal that would end up deciding the match.
Belhaven wasn't deterred from keeping the pressure on after going down by a score, keeping the pressure on the Buffaloes defense to preserve the victory. The Blazers had multiple corner kicks in the final 20 minutes of the game that led to good scoring opportunities.
Unfortunately the bounces didn't go their way.
Jordan Organ had a good pretty shot in the 78
th minute, but McInturff pushed the shot over the crossbar.
Chelsea Smith also had a header hit off the goal post and out off of a Quintero corner kick.
The Blazers fall to 1-2 following the loss, while the Buffaloes improve to 2-1-1 on the year with the win.
Belhaven returns home for a four game home-stand starting Tuesday against Delta State at 6 p.m. at Newell Field.
