Blazers Stalled by Texas-Brownsville

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss.—The Belhaven women's soccer team fell at home 1-0 to the visiting Scorpions of University of Texas at Brownsville on Saturday afternoon. The Blazers heated second half attack was rebuffed and the Scorpions were able to escape with a win on a solo first half goal.

Texas-Brownsville (2-3) was able to control the ball in their offensive half for much of the first half. Their attack was led by Leah Russell and Nelleke Smits, each of whom collected three shots on the day.

The Blazers were able to hold strong on defense for the first 25 minutes of the game, despite being under constant pressure from their opponent. Nicole Walsh made diving saves on two separate breakaways by the Scorpions, keeping her shutout alive. Chelsea DeLeon, Morgan Ogale and Ashley Harber also made key defensive stops for the Blazers that could have been good scoring opportunities for the Scorpions.

In the 26th minute, Russell was able to cut through the middle of the Blazer defense and tuck a ball past Walsh into the right side of the goal.

The first half ended with the Scorpions leading both time of possession and shots at 9-2. Walsh picked up four saves in the first half out of the five shots on goal for Texas-Brownsville.

In the second half, the Blazers come out with a different intensity. After being outplayed on both ends of the field in the first half, Belhaven put the pressure on the Scorpions defense.

Belhaven forced four corners in the second half and had multiple good looks at the net, but they were all stopped by goalkeeper Amanda Fulton. The Blazers were able to control the clock and grind away at the Scorpion defense, but were ultimately unable to find the back of the net.

Had the clock been extended a minute or two more, the Blazers may have had another golden opportunity to tie the game with the pendulum swinging in their favor.

Belhaven falls to 2-5 on the season, while the Scorpions improve to 2-3. The Blazers return to action on Thursday as they begin their Southern States Athletic Conference schedule on the road against Emmanuel College at 5:00 PM.
