Blazers Get Back on Track against Tougaloo

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team snapped a four game losing skid Wednesday night, defeating Tougaloo College 11-2 at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, exploded for 12 hits and scored in each of the last five innings to pull away for the victory.

Belhaven (32-19) started off slow and things did not look good early as the Bulldogs moved in front 2-0 after three frames. The Blazers broke through for an unearned run in the fourth and then the hit of the game came in the fifth when left fielder Anthony Doss launched his eight home run of the season to right center field. The three run blast gave the Blazers a 4-2 lead they would never relinquish.

Belhaven duplicated the fifth inning with three more runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI triple by DH Jaime Bruno, an RBI triple by pinch hitter Hamilton Harper, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of center fielder Tyler Wrinkle. In the seventh, the Blazers extended the lead to 8-2 on an RBI ground ball by pinch hitter Joshua Bouldin and then in the eighth Belhaven put the exclamation point on the win with three more scores. Third baseman brought in two on a single to left and the first baseman Ryan Saunders cashed in the third run of the frame with a single to right.

Doss ended the game with a 2 for 2 night at the plate with three runs batted in and three runs scored to anchor the Blazer offense. Saunders was 3 for 5 with an RBI followed by Wrinkle with two hits and one run batted in. Right fielder Tom Wertz, Britt, second baseman Jason Hicks, Bruno and Harper all had one hit apiece. Britt tacked on two runs batted in and Bruno along with Harper notched an RBI. Three of Belhaven's hits were triples as Saunders, Bruno, and Harper had one three bagger each.

Belhaven used nine pitchers in the game and Jon Patino ended up getting credit for the win as he moves to 7-1 on the season. Patino tossed a scoreless fifth with two strikeouts. Nick Meekins allowed both Tougaloo runs in the third inning.

Tougaloo (4-36) was led by DH Rodney Mckay who was 1 for 3 with one run batted in. Shortstop Dustin Porter, center fielder Derell McLemore, left fielder Marcus Brumfield, right fielder Chris Oliver, and second baseman Michael Glasper had one hit apiece. Bradley Simpson took the loss in relief allowing four runs on four hits in three innings on the mound.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday opening a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series against third ranked Lee University at Smith-Wills Stadium. The first pitch is slated for 6:00 PM.
