Four Run 5th Inning Sparks Millsaps Victory over Blazers

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team fell for the third time this season to cross town rival Millsaps College on Tuesday night at Smith-Wills Stadium 4-1. The Majors sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning and scored four times en route to the win and the 2012 Maloney Series Championship. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, plated their only run in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI single by right fielder Tom Wertz.

Millsaps (24-12) broke through against Belhaven starting pitcher Ryan Kassab on the strength of six hits in the fifth frame. Third baseman Stephen Gates ended the scoreless tie with a three run double against Kassab. Catcher Wes Perkins capped the inning with an RBI single to make it a 4-0 game. The Majors loaded the bases again with nobody out, but relief pitcher Robert Marzoni held Millsaps back to keep the Blazers within striking distance down by four.

Belhaven (31-19) got on the board in the seventh when center fielder Tyler Wrinkle walked with two outs and went to second on a wild pitch. Wertz then rounded him in on the RBI base hit that cut the deficit to 4-1. The Blazers made one final push in the bottom of the ninth inning as catcher Kyle Wheeler singled and pinch hitter Joshua Bouldin reached on a one out base hit to bring the tying runner to the plate. However, Perkins who had come in to pitch buckled down and induced a fly out to center off the bat of Wrinkle and then struck out Wertz to end the game.

Despite Wertz's strikeout, he was Belhaven's lone bright spot on offense going 2 for 3 at the plate with one run batted in. He also reached base twice on walks. Wrinkle had one hit and a run scored followed by first baseman Ryan Saunders, Wheeler, and Bouldin with base hits. Wrinkle and second baseman Jason Hicks were each credited with stolen bases.

Ryan Kassab pitched four plus innings and suffered the loss dropping his record to 1-1 on the season. Kassab allowed all four runs on five hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Marzoni logged four innings in relief and Josh Clarke tossed a scoreless ninth.

Millsaps was led at the dish by Gates who went 2 for 4 with three runs batted in. First baseman Keith Shumaker was 2 for 4 and Samuel Doucet was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Perkins had a base hit and an RBI followed by center fielder Drew Leonard and second baseman Kevin Wall with a single apiece. The Majors outhit Belhaven 9-6 on Tuesday night.

Alex Granier pitched three innings and earned the win boosting his record to 3-0 this season. All three of Granier's wins have been against the Blazers this season. Granier allowed only one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in the victory. Perkins came out to the mound from behind home plate for the final two innings and picked up his first save of the season.

Belhaven will be back in action on Wednesday night, hosting Tougaloo College at Smith-Wills Stadium starting at 6:00 PM.
