JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team swept a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader against Spring Hill College Saturday afternoon at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the Preseason NAIA Top 25 Poll, won game one 12-3 and took game two 9-0. Belhaven also swept its first SSAC three game series of the season thanks to a 6-4 decision in the opener Friday night.
Game One
Spring Hill vaulted in front in the top of the first inning scoring on an RBI base hit from shortstop Ryan Cummings for a 1-0 lead. The Badgers advantage was short lived as Belhaven responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to go on top 3-1. Second baseman

The Blazers tacked on a run in the second on a run scoring single from Wertz and bumped the lead to 6-2 with two runs in the third. Catcher
Clay Bonds double in a run and Wheeler came up with an RBI when he reached on a fielder's choice. Belhaven notched one run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by left fielder
Anthony Doss and exploded for five runs to put the game away in the sixth. Doss had a three run home run followed by
Emilio DeSilva with an RBI double, and Wrinkle capped the inning with an RBI base hit to left field.
Belhaven (25-12, 10-8 SSAC) was led by Doss who had four runs batted in. Three of them came in on his sixth home run of the season. Wrinkle had a breakout game going 4 for 4 at the dish with two runs batted in. Hicks had two hits and two runs scored, including a double in the hit total. Shortstop

Bud Britt with a double each. Belhaven pounded out 15 hits, 11 runs batted in and five extra base hits. Wertz, Berry, and Hicks each had a stolen base in game one.
Brett Blaise started the game and went all seven innings allowing three runs on five with four walks and six strikeouts. Blaise improved his record to 4-1 this season on the hill with the victory.
Spring Hill (13-18, 5-13 SSAC) had two hits each from right fielder Wayne Huell and shortstop Ryan Cummings. Huell had a pair of doubles and Cummings had two runs batted in. Starting pitcher Michael Moch tossed five innings and was tagged with the loss. Moch (2-4) gave up seven runs on 10 hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Game Two
Belhaven's big inning in game two proved to be the sixth, scoring five times to ice the game away. The Blazers broke onto scoreboard in the second, scoring an unearned run on an RBI groundout by DH
Ryan Saunders. Britt had reached on an error by Cummings to start the frame and scored the run. Belhaven sent up two more runs in the fifth when starting pitcher Nick Schmiemeier issued back to back bases loaded walks to Bruno and Wrinkle to make it a 3-0 game.
In the sixth, Bruno delivered the only hit of the inning, a three run home run blast to straight away center field. Wertz squeezed home a run on a sac bunt and Hicks crossed the plate on a throwing error by catcher Fred Rossi accounting for the other two tallies. Run number nine of the game was recorded without the aid of a hit in the seventh on an RBI groundout from Hicks.
Bruno was Belhaven's leading run producer in game two driving in four runs with three on his sixth home run of the season. Wrinkle had two more hits and an RBI followed by Berry with a pair of hits. Wertz had one hit and an RBI on a squeeze play and Britt ended game two with a hit and a run scored. The Blazers only had seven hits, but made the most of their opportunities to score the nine runs. Geoffrey Thomas had his best outing of the season and picked up the win to move to 3-3 in 2012. Thomas fired a complete game shutout and allowed only two hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Left fielder Kendell Carvin and third baseman Justin Martin had the only hits for the Badgers in game two. Both hits did not leave the infield. Schmiemeier permitted eight runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings of work. David Dupuy was responsible for one run in one inning on the mound.
Belhaven will be back in action on Wednesday night, hosting Tougaloo at Smith-Wills Stadium beginning at 6:00 PM.
