Blazers Bats Come Alive in 15-7 Win at Mississippi College

CLINTON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team improved to 2-1 in Maloney Series play thanks to a 15-7 win at Mississippi College Tuesday night. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the Preseason NAIA Top 25 Poll, pounded out a season high 20 hits, which included three home runs, to help power Belhaven to the victory.

Belhaven (22-12) surged in front in the first inning scoring six times to establish a foothold in the game. Left fielder Anthony Doss came up with the tone setting hit by blasting the first of two home runs of the night over the wall in left center. Doss recorded three of his six RBI's in the game with that one swing of the bat. Third baseman Bud Britt followed Doss with a single and then came home on DH Jamie Bruno's fifth home run of the season. Shortstop Ryne Cook capped the inning with an RBI single to left field.

Mississippi College (10-12) picked up single runs in the bottom of the first and second to cut the Belhaven lead down to 6-2 before the Blazers pushed the lead up to 7-2 in the fourth on a run scoring single by Britt. Belhaven chalked up three more runs in the fifth on a throwing error by pitcher Luke Hargett and an RBI groundout from right fielder Tom Wertz. Leading 10-2 going into the seventh, Doss generated his fourth run batted in on a single to left that chased home Wertz.

The Choctaws would rally for a run in the fifth and then four runs in the eighth beginning when DH Eric Wilkes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded by relief pitcher Mark Husband. Catcher Chad Wooten then drew a bases loaded walk from Alan McHenry and a two run double off the bat of shortstop Josh Perez accounted for runs three and four. McHenry ended up recording two outs and closer Josh Clarke was brought in for the final out.

In the top of the ninth, Belhaven ended the Choctaws comeback bid with four more runs. Doss connected on a two run home run followed by an RBI on a fielder's choice from first baseman Emilio DeSilva. Catcher Clay Bonds brought in Kyle Wheeler for the innings fourth run. Clarke remained on the hill for the ninth and worked around two errors to close out the game and pick up the save.

Doss ended the night with five hits in six plate appearances, including the two home runs, with six runs batted in. Doss boosted his batting average 22 points to .424 and now has five home runs and 30 RBI's on the season. Britt was 3 for 6 with on RBI followed by Wrinkle and Bonds with three hits. One of Wrinkle's hits was a double and Bonds picked up an RBI. Second baseman Jason Hicks had two hits, including a double, while Bruno had one hit and two runs batted in. Bruno leads the Blazers in RBI's with 31. Wertz had a triple and an RBI followed by Cook with an RBI single.

Brandon McHenry (3-0) turned in another solid performance on the mound by logging six innings to pick up the win. McHenry allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Clarke picked up his eighth save with 1.1 innings on the bump in relief.

Third baseman Spencer Brunson led the Choctaws with three hits including a pair of doubles. Perez had two hits and two runs batted in followed by J'Marcus Brooks with two runs batted in. Kenneth Atwood started on the hill and lasted just one inning, surrendering six runs on seven hits. Atwood was ticketed with the loss dropping his record to 0-3. Hargett and Wesley Williams each permitted four runs to cross the plate.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday welcoming Spring Hill College to Smith-Wills Stadium for a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series beginning Friday night at 6:00 PM. Game number two and three of the series is scheduled for Saturday starting at 1:00 PM.
