Blazers Drop Two Games at University of Mobile

MOBILE, Ala.- The Belhaven baseball team suffered two Southern States Athletic Conference  losses at University of Mobile on Friday falling in game one 6-4 and game in game two 5-0. The Blazers dropped their sixth and seventh games of the season making dropping the overall record to 15-7 and 4-4 in SSAC play.

Game One
Belhaven fell behind 1-0 to start the game and then tied the contest up at 1-1 in the top 2nd when Jamie Bruno stepped up to the plate and hit a solo homerun, his second of the season. The Blazers tacked on another run in the top of the 3rd  when second baseman Jason Hicks hit a sacrifice fly to deep left-center allowing left fielder Anthony Doss to come in for a run giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, Mobile's catcher Ryan Waltman hit a grand slam to put the Rams on top 5-2. The Blazers answered with two runs on a Hicks homerun over the left field fence bringing in Jamie Bruno who had singled to lead off the inning. Leading 5-4, the Rams tacked on another run in the bottom of the 6th from a Braxton Hamil triple that chased home Ryan Parazine giving Mobile a two run advantage 6-4. The Blazers failed to score in the top half of the seventh inning as the Rams held on for the win.

Belhaven was led by designated hitter Jamie Bruno and first baseman Ryan Saunders with two hits a piece. Hicks led the Blazers in RBIs with three while Bruno managed one RBI. Geoffrey Thomas started on the mound and suffered the loss for the Blazers to go to 2-2. Thomas pitched five innings allowed five hits and five runs. Matthew Shaw pitched one inning allowing two hits and one run.

Ryan Parazine led the Rams in hits chalking up three of their seven in game one. Ryan Waltman turned in five RBI's with four coming on the grand slam. Michael King started on the mound for the Rams allowing six hits and four runs as he picked up the win for the Rams.

Game Two
In the second game, Belhaven and Mobile failed to score until the third inning when the Rams struck for two runs. Ryan Parazine doubled to deep right sending home John Soutullo and Josh Blaylock for a 2-0 advantage.

In the bottom of the fourth, Braxton Hamil ran home for the Rams when Ryne Phillips hit a single to right field. Justin Beck added a fourth run in the bottom of the fifth inning bringing the score to 4-0 in favor of Mobile. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ryan Waltman added one more insurance run hitting his second homerun of the day over the left field fence on a 2-1 count. The Rams walked away with a 5-0 victory at the end of the contest.

Tom Wertz and Jason Hicks had the only hits for the Blazers. Parazine went 2 for 4 at the dish for the Rams with three runs batted in. Allen Johnson (2-4) started on the mound for the Blazers and took the loss surrendering four runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. Ryan Hines pitched eight innings allowing just two hits in the win for Mobile.

The Blazers, ranked 15th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, will try and salvage game three of the series Saturday afternoon. Saturday's game weather permitting will be at 1:00 PM.
