Blazers Take Home Win over Bethel (TN)

Box Score
MCKENZIE, Tenn.-The Belhaven baseball team rallied from an early 2-0 deficit and came away with an 8-4 victory at Bethel University (TN) on Tuesday afternoon. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the Preseason NAIA Top 25 Poll, extended their winning streak to four games thanks to Tuesday's outcome.

It didn't take long for Bethel to get out in front as the Wildcats scored twice in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 2-0 lead. Designated hitter Chris Cain sent a two out two run triple to center accounting for the two runs. Belhaven evened things up in the top of the third when Ryne Cook scored on a throwing error by the left fielder Jordan Stack off a single to left by center fielder Tyler Wrinkle. Left fielder Anthony Doss then followed with an RBI base hit to left, plating Wrinkle for the tying run.

The 2-2 tie was short lived as Bethel went back on top in the bottom of the third on an RBI base hit by Cain to make it a 3-2 game. Belhaven then changed the complexion of the game in the fifth, scoring four times to take the lead for good. Second baseman Jason Hicks doubled in a run, followed by a costly Wildcat error that permitted two more runs to come in. First baseman Ryan Saunders capped the inning with an RBI double to make it a 6-3 contest.

The Blazers added a run in the seventh on an RBI single by right fielder Tom Wertz and in the ninth posted their eighth run on a Bud Britt RBI double. Bethel's only other run came home in the seventh as Cain was credited with his fourth run batted in on a single to left.

Belhaven (19-10) was led by left fielder Anthony Doss who went 3 for 4, including one double, with one run batted in. Third baseman Bud Britt was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored, and an RBI while shortstop Ryne Cook matched Britt's hit numbers with two hits, a double, and two runs scored. Second baseman Jason Hicks and first baseman Ryan Saunders each chipped in with a double and an RBI. Belhaven ended the game with six more doubles and now have 67 on the season.

Brandon McHenry started on the bump for Belhaven and pitched seven innings allowing four runs on 11 hits en route to his second win of the season (2-0). Jon Patino closed the game, firing two innings for his first save of 2012.

Bethel (15-9) had the majority of its run production from DH Chris Cain who went 3 for 4 with four runs batted in. Catcher Tyler Roberson and third baseman Chase Pilkenton both had two hits apiece. Cliff Spencer started on the hill for the Wildcats and was touched for six runs on eight hits leading to a loss in the decision column.

Belhaven stays on the road Wednesday, heading to Freed-Hardeman for a 2:00 PM first pitch.
