Blazers Roll Past Rust Wednesday

JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team scored 12 runs in the first inning and never looked back en route to a 22-0 win against Rust College at Smith-Wills Stadium Wednesday. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, are now 12-2 at home this season.

Belhaven (15-5) put the game away in the first inning with key hits by Kyle Wheeler and Anthony Doss that produced seven of the 12 runs in the frame. Wheeler blasted his first home run of the season to left, a three run shot, followed by a grand slam later in the inning by Doss. Belhaven added three more runs in the third inning when Dillon Berry scored on a wild pitched followed by an RBI single by Tom Wertz and sacrifice fly by Ryan Saunders. Belhaven capped the night in the sixth plating six more runs on a two run single by Emilio DeSilva, a two run double by Josiah Richard, an RBI groundout by Reagan Rutledge, and an RBI base hit by Berry. The Blazers pounded out a season high of 19 hits with six doubles, two triples, and two home runs.

Belhaven was paced at the plate by Tom Wertz with three hits and three runs batted in. Doss drove in five runs on the grand slam and RBI triple that occurred in the first inning. Wheeler was 2 for 4 with three runs batted in followed by Berry with two hits and an RBI. Justin Hill also recorded a multi hit game going 2 for 3 with a double in the scorebook. Joshua Bouldin picked up an RBI on one hit, Jamie Bruno was 1 for 2 with a double and three runs scored, Zach Zylstra was 1 for 2 with an RBI, and Rutledge had one hit and one RBI on the night.

Ryan Kassab started the game and pitched the first three innings giving up just one hit while striking out seven. Alan McHenry was the winner in relief, logging two innings of work on the hill as he goes to 1-0 on the season. Mark Husband and David Hill also saw an inning of action out of the bullpen.

Aubry Burdine had the only hit for Rust, a two out single in the top of the first inning. Rosevelt Ford went the distance on the bump for Rust, allowing all 22 runs on 19 hits. He walked seven and struck out four with 19 of the runs being earned.

Belhaven will be back in action on Friday as the team travels to the University of Mobile for game one of a three game Southern States Athletic Conference series beginning at 2:00 PM. The Blazers will wrap up the three game set on Saturday with a doubleheader starting a 12:00 PM.
