Blazers Upended by 6th Ranked LSU-Shreveport

JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven baseball team fell behind early and could never recover losing to 6th ranked LSU-Shreveport 11-3 Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Belhaven Invitational at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the Preseason NAIA Top 25 Poll, spotted the Pilots four runs in the top of the first which set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.

LSU-Shreveport (6-0) scored all the runs they would need in the first inning as the Pilots sent all nine of their hits to the plate. Designated hitter Greg Friesen doubled in the first run of the inning and then shortstop Greg Estrada followed with a single to make it a 2-0 game. Left fielder Cade Billeaudeaux cashed in the second run on an RBI groundout and catcher David Dorton extended the lead to 4-0 on an RBI single. The Pilots tacked on two more runs in the second and solo runs in the third and fifth innings.

Belhaven (7-3) scored its only three runs in the bottom of the fifth on RBI doubles by Jamie Bruno and Joshua Bouldin. The third run came in on a throwing error by LSUS pitcher Logan Norris. LSU-Shreveport stopped any momentum Belhaven may have gained by answering with three more runs in the top of the sixth to seal the game.

One bright spot in the game was second baseman Jason Hicks who went 4 for 4 with a double and three singles. Bruno and Anthony Doss each had two hits in the contest and one double apiece. Bouldin had a one for five day with a double and an RBI.The Blazers accumulated nine hits as a team and added four more doubles to the stat sheet.

Allen Johnson got the start on the hill and labored through five innings of work, allowing eight runs on 13 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. The loss drops his season record to 1-2. Mark Husband was charged with the other three runs in 0.2 innings on the mound.

LSU-Shreveport (6-0) was led at the plate by Greg Friesen who went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a run scored and an RBI. Tyler Alton has three hits in five plate appearances in which he collected two runs batted in. Kim Barthel, Stephen Hobbins, David Dorton, Manny Estrada, and Cade Billeaudeaux each had two hits. The Pilots pounded out a total of 19 hits on the afternoon. Starting pitcher Logan Norris tossed six innings and limited the Blazers to three runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The win bumps his record to 2-0.
