Blazers Gain Win #20 against Mobile

Jackson, Miss.- The Belhaven women's basketball team kept rolling with a Southern States Athletic Conference win over the University of Mobile Thursday night 79-63 . The Blazers extended their winning streak to eight and in the process reached their 20th win of the season. Ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, the Blazers now own a one and a half game lead over Loyola in the SSAC West Division standings.

Belhaven's offense opened the game on a three pointer by junior Sarah Carr less than two minutes into the game. Daphnee Frieson answered 30 seconds later for the Rams bringing the score to 3-2. Senior Regena Jackson helped build a 13-8 lead in favor of Belhaven over the next two minutes and then Alice Honnery tied the game for the Rams with 13:53 to go in the first half. Frieson briefly put the Rams in front at 16-15 a few seconds later and then the game went back and forth until Belhaven Senior Kiara Johnson tied the game with 1:31 remaining in the first half. Johnson closed the half on a pair of free throws scoring her 10th and 11th points of the game to give Belhaven a 37-35 halftime lead.

Within the first minute of the second half, Honnery tied the game for the Rams twice and brought the score to 39-39. Ericka Leflore knocked down a jumper and sent Belhaven back in front by two points 41-39 with 18:40 to go in the second half. Belhaven never looked back from that point on as Jackson eventually got a jumper to give the Blazers their largest lead of the contest at 20, 76:56 with 3:07 left to go. Belhaven went on from there to seal the 79-63 win.

Belhaven (20-5, 13-1 SSAC) had four players in double digits on Thursday and shot 42.3 % for the game with Jackson leading the way with 26 points, four steals and four rebounds. Junior Sarah Carr, helped Belhaven's offense filling up a trio of three pointers in a 13 point effort. Leflore contributed to Belhaven's success with eight rebounds and eight points. Johnson and senior Portia Tucker had an impact on the Blazers offense scoring 11 and 14 points respectively. Belhaven's defense forced 30 Mobile turnovers which translated to 28 points.

Mobile (6-17, 4-10 SSAC) was led by Alice Honnery with 21 points. Honnery and Daphnee Frieson shared the rebound lead for the Rams piling up a total of 11 rebounds each. The Rams knocked down 47.2 percent of their field goals (25-53), but hurt themselves with turnovers. Mobile had a 42-32 edge in rebounding.

The Blazers will be back in action on Saturday when they head to William Carey University for another SSAC contest beginning at 5:00 PM.
