MONTGOMERY, Ala.- The Belhaven women's basketball team rallied from a 15 point first half deficit and in the process nearly upset Georgetown College (KY) on day two of the Coaches' vs. Cancer Classic hosted by Huntingdon College Saturday night in Montgomery, Alabama. The Tigers were able to hang on for a 76-70 victory after the Blazers battled all the way back to tie the game late in the second half.
Belhaven (5-8) had to play catch up most of the night as Georgetown maintained the edge for the majority of the game.
TaShayla Steede gave the Blazers a quick 2-0 advantage on a layup 52 seconds into the contest. The Tigers then stepped in front 3-2 on a layup by Lizza Jones at the 18 minute mark of the first half. Erika Leflore answered with two points in the paint for Belhaven and put the Blazers back on top 4-3. It would be the final lead of the night for Belhaven.
Georgetown went on a 10-0 run to go up 13-4 and eventually constructed a 33-18 gap with 6:19 left in the opening half. The Blazers were able to recoup some ground thanks to a 12-3 run to close the half. Wakefield capped the scoring with a triple, making the score 36-30 as both teams headed to the locker room.
The Blazers continued to chip away at the deficit throughout the second half and were finally able to even the score with 6:37 to go in the contest.
Alisha Rayborn provided the equalizer on a layup and was also fouled on the play. Unfortunately, the free throw didn't find its mark, keeping the game deadlocked at 58-58. After a Georgetown timeout, the Tigers were able to regroup and take control of the game with a 10-2 run. Belhaven couldn't recover as the Tigers held on for the 76-70 win.
Belhaven was led by Rayborn who had a career high 19 points and seven rebounds on 8 of 14 shooting from the field. Wakefield added 16 points and Leflore chipped in 14 points while grabbing six rebounds. The Blazers outrebounded the Tigers 36-32 and were 28 of 59 from the field (47.5 percent).
Kourtney Tyra led the way for Georgetown (8-5) with 20 points followed by Lizza Jones with 19 points, Andrea Howard had 18 points, and Devanny King tossed in 13 points. The Tigers were 27 of 57 from the field equating to a 47.4 shooting percentage.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday when the team hosts Lee University in a Southern States Athletic Conference contest. The tip-off is slated for 5:30 PM in Rugg Arena.
