CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Belhaven women's soccer team closed the 2012 season with a 4-1 loss against the number one rated team in the country, Lee University. The Blazers gave a good fight in the losing effort, but were ultimately overmatched by the talented Flames.
A month ago, Lee went into H.T. Newell Field and scored six first half goals on their way to a 6-0 rout of the Blazers. With the roles reversed in this second matchup, Belhaven was looking to hold the Lee attack at bay.
However, the Flames weren't going to let the Blazers hang around with upset on the mind for too long.
In the 14th minute, Lee forward Ashley Aragona headed a cross from Ode Fulutudilu past a diving
Nicole Walsh to give the Flames a 1-0 lead. The play was started in the midfield by Leah Fortune, who was also credited with assist on the goal.
The Blazers hunkered down on defense for the next twenty minutes, but couldn't turn solid defensive plays into a good scoring opportunity on the other end of the field. Lee's defense is known for being one of the stingiest in the NAIA.
Fulutudilu scored her third goal against the Blazers this season in the 39th minute, heading a pass from Amy Cochran to put the Flames up two. Lee would hold that lead heading into the break.
Lee wasted no time in the second half, adding their third goal of the contest off the foot of Fortune pushing the lead to three.
Despite having the game in hand, the Flames added another goal with 15 minutes remaining to officially end any possibility of a realistic Blazers' comeback.
Belhaven never quit on the game and their persistence paid off in the closing minutes, as they were able to add their first goal against top-rated Lee on the year.
Chelsea Smith headed in her first goal of the season off of a corner from
Rebecca Ontero.
The Blazers conclude their season with a 6-13 record, but took a huge step forward in conference play this year. Belhaven has had a tough time in the SSAC since joining the league two years ago, but won four matches and made the conference tournament for the first time.
The Blazers can come away from the match knowing they gave it their all and look forward to what should be a promising 2013 season.
