Blazers Pickup First SSAC Victory at Brenau

Box Score
GAINESVILLE, Ga. – Playing in their first game in nearly two weeks, the Belhaven women's basketball team used a furious second half rally to pick up their first Southern States Athletic Conference victory of the season. The Blazers trailed by double digits at halftime, but found an offensive rhythm after the break to defeat Brenau 65-56 on the road.

It took twenty minutes for the Blazers to shake off a bit of rust after being on a competition hiatus for the last 13 days, but they looked like a team on a mission in the second half.

Brenau looked like the better team from the start, jumping on the Blazers early on their way to an 11-point halftime lead.
Guard Brittney Wiley hurt Belhaven in the first half from the three point line, where she made four of her five attempts. Wiley, who finished with 24 points on the night, was the main reason for the Golden Tigers large first half lead.

Combining her efforts was forward Nikki Reed, who posted a 15 point and seven rebound performance. She gave the Blazers fits under the rim with her soft touch under the basket and knack to find holes in the Belhaven defense.

However, Belhaven came out of the break believing that they could finally be the team to spoil an opponent's home conference event.

Conference games have not been kind to the Blazers to start the season. Southern Poly used a stringent defense to limit the Belhaven attack in their first game and then Coastal Georgia used a last second shot to send the game to overtime, before they ultimately defeated the Blazers.

The Blazers outscored the Golden Tigers 44-24 in the second half to claim the nine-point victory.
Four of the five Belhaven starters finished with double digit point performances: Erika Leflore (14 points), Ashley Wakefield (14 points), Alisha Rayborn (13 points), Sarah Carr (12 points).

Rayborn had another excellent game both shooting and distributing the basketball. The senior guard has been a big contributor on both ends of the floor as Belhaven has dealt with injuries a multiple spots.

She has taken over the point guard duties from the injured Kenya Wright and performed extremely well in her spot. Rayborn finished with seven assists in the game.

Sierra Cavitt was the leading rebounder for Belhaven with six.

The Blazers will look to get back to .500 in conference play when they travel to Truett-McConnell to take on the Bears. The game will get underway at 2:00 PM Saturday afternoon.
