Bethel Tops Blazers at the Buzzer

Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's basketball team dropped a heart breaker at home against visiting Bethel University on Tuesday evening. Bethel hit a three-point shot at the buzzer to beat the Blazers by one, 59-58, sending Belhaven to 2-3 on the season.

Bethel came into the game ranked 22nd in the country and 6th in the country in scoring, which helped lead to their 4-1 start to the year. Belhaven came into the contest with a 2-2 record and has dealt with some serious injuries to key players in almost every game they've played on the year. Somehow they have found ways to win without some of their big contributors on the floor.

The Blazers were going to need extra effort on Tuesday night if they were going to beat the favored Wildcats.
The two teams traded baskets the entire night. Neither had a lead of more than four points in the first half and a late three point play by Jasmine Taylor gave Bethel a 24-22 lead heading into halftime.

Each team came out of the locker room with a renewed shooting touch in the second half, after both had poor shooting percentages in the first.

A see-saw battle ensued, with the teams trading the lead until there was about two minutes left in the game. It was then that Belhaven looked like they would take control.

The Blazers got solid efforts in the second stanza from both Ashley Wakefield and Erika Leflore. Each player put up double digit performances, with most of their points coming in the second half.
Wakefield was playing in a live game for the first time in two weeks after missing this past weekend's action due to injury. She wore a clear facemask during the game on Tuesday night and will likely have to wear it for a good portion of the season.

Leflore continued her dominant play down low with another double-double, finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
The two players got Belhaven a five point lead late in the game, but the Wildcats were able to chip it down to two after a few traded baskets between the two teams. Bethel inbounded the ball under their own basket with nine seconds remaining on the game clock.

The pass went to the middle of the paint, but was kicked to the top of the key. Jasmine Porter then threw a skip pass to the left corner of the floor where Katie VanDyke was waiting for the pass just outside the three-point line.
VanDyke was the leading three-point shooter coming into the game for the Wildcats, but had missed all five of her shots on the night.

With a wide open look and less than a tick on the clock, VanDyke found the right time to make her only basket of the game. The ball hit nothing but net as the clock screamed loudly and sent the Wildcats to a one-point victory, their fifth of the season.

The Blazers played well enough to win, which makes a loss like this tough to swallow. However, Belhaven can look to build upon the solid effort as they begin SSAC conference play on Friday night against Southern Poly.
