JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven women's basketball team bounced back from a loss to cross town rival Tougaloo College on Friday night with a 59-48 victory over Harris-Stowe State University in Rugg Arena Saturday afternoon. Junior forward Erika Leflore fired in a season high 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to post her first double double of the 2012-13 campaign.
Belhaven (2-2) got off to a slow start but battled through the first half to take a 26-24 lead into the locker room when the buzzer sounded. Junior forward
Amber Smith knocked down a jumper with four seconds on the clock to vault the Blazers in front. The opening 20 minutes on Saturday saw five lead changes and two ties as both teams worked to establish themselves in the game.
It didn't take long for Belhaven to put its stamp on the contest, opening the final period with a 12-2 run that resulted in a 38-26 lead. From that point on, the Blazers would never relinquish the advantage on their way to the win. Harris-Stowe made one last attempt to get back in the game in the final two minutes with a 5-0 run, but it was too little too late. After seeing their lead cut to seven at 55-48, the Blazers scored the final four points on a pair of free throws by
Alisha Rayborn and
Sarah Carr to close the books on a victory.
Leflore led all scorers with 22 points followed by
Sarah Carr with 11 points for Belhaven. Rayborn dished out five assists and came up with two steals on the afternoon. As a team, the Blazers shot at a 40.7 percent clip from the field and were 7 of 11 from the free throw line. The Blazers outrebounded Harris-Stowe 39-33 and forced 18 turnovers that led to 23 points. Belhaven's bench outscored the Hornet's 27-0 and owned the paint with 34 of the 59 points coming in the low post.
Harris-Stowe State was paced by Alexis Minner with 14 points and four assists. Kayla Fisher added 12 points and Shanique Buford finished the contest with nine points and 12 rebounds. Belhaven held Harris-Stowe to a 37.5 percent field goal percentage (18-48).
