JACKSON, Miss. – The Belhaven women's soccer team fell to visiting Faulkner University in a Southern States Athletic Conference match on Thursday night 2-1 at H.T. Newell Field. The game was tied at halftime 1-1, but an own goal gave the Eagles their fourth conference victory of the season.
The tempo was dictated from the outset by freshman midfield
Laura Quintero. Her combination of speed and superb ball-handling allowed the Blazers to retain possession in the middle of the field. Multiple times in the first few minutes, the Quintero-led offense produced outstanding scoring opportunities for Belhaven.
In the 8th minute their persistence paid off when
Saje Pernie slid underneath Eagles' goalkeeper Caitlin Sebert to tip the ball past her. Setting up the play was
Jordan Organ, who crossed the ball from the left side after retrieving a pass from Quintero.
Organ's pass looked like it would be corralled by Sebert, but it glanced off of her finger tips into the sliding Pernie.
Belhaven's defense was a major reason for the early offensive success as they kept the Eagles' strikers ahead of them at all times. The scoring chances for Faulkner were few and far between in the first 25 minutes.
The tide started to turn with 15 minutes left in the first half when the Eagles brought in a few replacements on the front line. Led by Latoya Panton, Faulkner (6-5-1, 4-0-1 SSAC) was able to finally break through the Belhaven (4-8, 2-3 SSAC) defense to challenge
Nicole Walsh in goal.
With two minutes remaining in the half, Panton broke free from the final Belhaven defender and put a ball past Walsh to tie the game at one. Panton received a through ball up the middle from Amanda Gemmell that was perfectly placed at the top of the 18-yard box.
The second half was a back and forth battle for both squads. Most of the half was spent played in the middle third of the field; with neither team getting good looks at the net.
In the 69th minutes Panton broke through the ranks once again for the Eagles, but this time defender
Morgan Ogale was with her step-for-step.
The ball escaped Panton's possession ten yards in front of the net, but a breakdown between Walsh and the Belhaven defense led to an own goal. Walsh came out of the net to gather the ball, but the ball was accidentally tipped past her on the right side and into the net.
Unfortunately for the Blazers, the gaffe on defense ended up as the clinching score for Faulkner. Belhaven garnered a few looks at the goal in the waning minutes of the match, but were unable to capitalize on any of those chances.
Belhaven ends their two week home stand, traveling to Mobile, Alabama on Saturday to take on the Spring Hill Badgers. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 PM.
