JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven men's soccer team had a rough end to the regular season on Saturday night, falling to William Carey 3-2 in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 15th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll, rallied from a 2-1 deficit to tie the game with eight minutes to go only to see the Crusaders score the game winner with a minute left on the clock.
Belhaven (14-3-1, 7-3-1 SSAC) jumped out to an early edge when senior
Loic Miliani cashed in the first of two goals on the night in the 32nd minute. Junior
Eduardo Cruz fed the ball to Miliani with a through pass that set him up in a one on one situation with goalkeeper Charlie Laridan. Miliani was able to push the ball past Laridan with his left foot from inside the box giving Belhaven a 1-0 lead.
The Blazers maintained their 1-0 advantage going into the second half and it stayed that way until the 64th minute. William Carey (9-7-1, 6-4 SSAC) evened the contest on a goal by Helge Pietschmann off an assist from Tyler Szura. Pietschmann struck again in the 78th minute following a Belhaven foul that awarded him a free kick. He bent the ball past goalie
Carl Blundell, giving the Crusaders a 2-1 lead.
Miliani provided the equalizer in the 82nd minute with his second goal of the match and fifth goal of the season. It was an unassisted goal for Miliani, who despite being slowed by injury, leads the team with nine assists this season.
At that point, the game appeared to be destined for overtime tied at 2-2, but the Crusaders had other plans. With time winding down, Szura found himself in front of an open net after the ball got deflected in his direction. His shot found the mark in the 89th minute making the score 3-2. Belhaven had one more chance to attack the net before time expired, however a header by Blundell went wide on the final play of the game.
William Carey outshot Belhaven 23-17 and forced Blundell to make 10 saves in the match. Unfortunately, three of the shots got past Blundell and ended up being the difference in the match. Laridan came away with five saves en route to the victory for the Crusaders.
Guilherme Sousa had the most looks at the goal for Belhaven, firing four shots with two of them being on goal. Danny Eborall attempted a game high six shots for William Carey.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday in the opening round of the SSAC conference tournament. The Blazers will face Southern Polytechnic State University or William Carey University at H.T. Newell Field. Southern Poly and William Carey are scheduled to play each other on Tuesday in the final regular season game for both teams with Belhaven taking on the winner.
