Blazers Outlast Southern Wesleyan in 2 OT

Box Score
CENTRAL, S.C. – The Belhaven women's soccer team needed a win on Friday to take a big step towards their first SSAC playoff berth. Belhaven was on the road, playing a Southern Wesleyan squad that had similar aspirations of getting that final playoff spot. Freshman defender Ashley Harber took the Blazers on her shoulders, netting two headers, including the game winner in the second overtime for a 2-1 Belhaven victory.

The Blazers got on the board in a hurry, which has become a trend for them over the past few weeks.

In the 6th minute, freshman midfielder Loredana Bono retrieved a ball that had been deflected off of a corner kick and centered it back into the goal box. The ball found the forehead of Harber and bounded into the back of the net for a quick 1-0 lead.

The goal was Harber's sixth goal of the season and the fourth time that she has scored by way of a header. It was also Bono's third assist on the season, all three of which have been on goals scored by Harber.

Belhaven has had trouble keeping their early leads this season and it had to be something in the back of the player's minds. However, the Blazer defense held strong for the next 40 minutes to take the one goal lead into the half.

Each team had good looks at the outset of the second half, but neither was able to convert on the golden opportunities. Belhaven was rebuffed multiple times in the first 20 minutes of the second half, as they were looking for a goal to put a comfortable distance between them and the Warriors. No team has rallied from a two-goal deficit to defeat Belhaven during the 2012 season.

Southern Wesleyan goalkeeper Ashley Robinson tipped shots from Rebecca Ontero and Laura Quintero to keep her team in the match.

With fifteen minutes to play, the Southern Wesleyan attack upped the intensity, knowing full well that they were running out of time to get the equalizer. Nicole Walsh made two of her six key saves to keep the Warriors out of the net.

However, Southern Wesleyan was finally able to break through the Blazer defense with six minutes to play when Abigail McDonald fired a shot past a diving Walsh.

Southern Wesleyan wasn't satisfied with the score knotted at one, as Allison Johns wailed three shots on net. Walsh met each shot before the goal line to keep the match tied and send it into overtime.

Belhaven dominated time of possession in the first overtime with four shots on net compared to none for the Warriors. Ashley Robinson made saves on all four shots for Southern Wesleyan to send the two teams into a final overtime.

Southern Wesleyan looked comfortable playing for a tie and most of the second overtime period was played in the middle third of the field. Neither goalkeeper was tested as the two teams wrestled over control of the ball.

Belhaven was finally able to gain some momentum, earning a corner kick with less than four minutes to play in the contest. Laura Quintero got the ball back after her corner kick was cleared and sent a ball back into goal box. There, Harber was waiting for the ball once again and sent a header screaming into the corner of the goal. The second goal was her seventh on the season, which is good for the team lead in scores.

The goal effectively ended the match and gave the Blazers their fourth victory in SSAC competition.

Belhaven improves to 6-8 on the year, while the Warriors drop to 5-6-1. The win total for the Blazers matches their total from a year ago with four games still to play. They also have placed themselves in prime position for one of those final two playoff spots still up for grabs, which was a goal for the team entering the season.

The Blazers will look to improve their record on Saturday when they travel to Georgia to take on Truett-McConnell at 1:00 PM.
