MOBILE, Ala.-The Belhaven women's basketball team picked up another Southern States Athletic Conference victory Saturday night defeating the University of Mobile 76-62. The Blazers, ranked 19th in the latest NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll, move into sole possession of first place in the SSAC West with the win. Belhaven has a half game lead on Loyola University (NO), who was idle in league play this weekend.
Belhaven struggled to get in the flow of the game early, falling behind 12-7 five minutes into the action. The Blazers then got on track and grabbed their first lead of the night at 13-12 on a
Regena Jackson basket with 12:28 to play in the half. Jackson's basket provided two points in what would be a 12-0 Belhaven run that eventually pushed the lead to 19-12 with just under 10 minutes to go until the break.
Mobile battled back with a 7-0 run to tie the game at 19 all, but a pair of Jackson free throws sent Belhaven back in front with seven minutes to go until halftime. The Blazers maintained control of the scoreboard for the remainder of the period and took a 33-27 lead into the locker room.
Mobile stayed close, and in the opening six minutes of the second half, eventually pulled back in front at 43-41 on a triple by Courtney Bayliss. Belhaven came back with three straight points to regain the edge 45-44 and from there the teams traded baskets until the Rams were able to construct a 52-49 lead with 8:25 to play. Belhaven then established a foothold in the game on the strength of a 17-5 run that built a 66-54 lead and was the catalyst for the 76-62 win. In total, the Blazers outscored the Rams 27-10 over the final eight minutes of the game.
Belhaven (14-5, 7-1 SSAC) was led by senior guard
Regena Jackson with a game high 23 points and five assists. Jackson came into the game ranked third in the NAIA in scoring average at 21.4 points per game. Three other Blazers landed in double figures as senior
Kiara Johnson fired in 13 points,
Portia Tucker added 11 points, and
Sarah Carr chipped in with 10 points.
Keishara Rouser was Belhaven's leading rebounder with five off the bench. The real story of the game was about turnovers as Belhaven's defense forced 30 Mobile miscues which led to 30 Blazer points. Belhaven made 43.5 percent of their field goals (27 of 62) and trailed the Rams in total rebounding 35-29.
Mobile (5-12, 3-5 SSAC) was paced by Courtney Bayliss with 15 points followed by Briana Edwards with 13 and Alice Honnery ended the night with 10 points. Daphnee Frieson had 11 rebounds to lead the Rams on the glass. Lauren Bethly had a game high six assists, but also had five turnovers. Mobile hit 45.8 percent of their field goal attempts (22-48).
