Jackson, MS-The Belhaven men's soccer team kept rolling on Thursday night posting another shutout victory in a 4-0 non-conference matchup against LSU-Shreveport at H.T. Newell Field. The Blazers, ranked 6th in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, were held to just one goal in the first half, but exploded for three goals in the final 45 minutes to put the contest away and take home the win.
Belhaven (5-0) pulled out in front five minutes into the first half when
Achille Campion connected on an unassisted goal from the top left portion of the box. Campion had an opportunity at a free kick following an LSUS foul and made the most of his opportunity. Early in the second half, it was Campion again who would add to the Blazer lead with his second goal of the game. This time the shot was setup by
Giovanni Correa giving Belhaven a 2-0 edge.
Belhaven went on to add two more late goals as
Alex Rodriguez landed a free kick in the back of the net following an LSU-Shreveport foul and then
Alexander Marquis scored on a penalty kick after a foul by LSUS in the box. The final two goals came in the 84th and 85th minutes respectively. Belhaven's defense was relentless again Thursday night limiting LSU-Shreveport (1-3-1) to only one shot on goal in the match.
Campion's two goals now give him a team high 11 so far this season in five games played. He has accumulated 22 points and two game winning kicks which are also team highs. Campion attempted a game high five shots with four being on goal against the Pilots. For Rodriguez, it was his first goal of the year and Marquis notched his second in 2011.
Greg Hartley (5-0) posted another shutout and another win in net giving home five wins and five shutouts. Hartley made one save in the match on a shot attempt by Nelson Zelaya.
Zelaya led the LSUS offense with four total shots followed by Ayinde Fraser and Luis Valladares with two apiece. The Pilots attempted 10 shots on the night compared to 18 by the Blazers. Lance Quini gave up three goals and made eight saves suffering the loss. Carson Bath allowed the penalty kick goal late in the contest.
