Blazers Take Two of Three at Loyola

New Orleans, LA-The Belhaven baseball team took the final game of a three game Southern States Athletic Conference West Division series Monday afternoon at Loyola University by the final of 6-3. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, scored two runs in the first, seventh, and ninth innings to come away with the win. Jimmy Gilford drove in the game tying run and scored the go ahead run in the seventh as Belhaven rallied from a 3-2 deficit.

Belhaven (14-5, 2-1 SSAC) took the early edge with two runs in the top of the first inning with the aid of one hit. Tyler Wrinkle got hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and then Gilford singled to right putting runners on the corners. Following a pop up to short by Lake Eiland, Paul Moreno reached on an error by first baseman Evan Turkish, but was credited with an RBI as Wrinkle came in from third to make it 1-0. Drew Dillard then lifted a sacrifice fly to left field plating Gilford from third extending the lead to 2-0.

Loyola (7-15, 1-2 SSAC) countered with a run in the bottom of the first on a two out base hit by Ryan Scott after Tyler Duplantis walked and went to second on a passed ball by catcher Derek Tortorich. The Wolpack pulled ahead in the bottom of the fifth as Steve Daigle, Jr. cleared the wall in left with a two run homer making it a 3-2 game.

The Blazers finally broke through again in the seventh with two runs to recapture the edge at 4-3. John Michael Williamson was hit by a pitch to open the inning and then pinch runner Jordan Brewer moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Wrinkle. Gilford then pounded his second double of the game into the left center field gap chasing home Brewer for the tying run. Later in the inning, Moreno cashed in Gilford from third with an RBI groundout to second base. Belhaven went on to tack on two more insurance runs in the top of the ninth on another RBI groundout by Moreno and on a squeeze bunt from Brayden Dykes. Blazer closer Josh Clarke closed the door on the Wolfpack in the ninth to collect his third save of the season.

Belhaven was led at the plate by Gilford who went 5 for 5 with three singles, two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Gilford boosted his season average to .406 in 2011 and now has 13 RBI. Wrinkle, Eiland and Saunders each had a hit while Moreno picked up three runs batted in with Dillard and Dykes chipping in with one apiece. The Blazers finished the game with eight totals hits and one error.

Alan McHenry pitched the first seven innings and picked up his fifth win of the season as he tossed the first seven innings allowing three runs on six hits. McHenry walked two and struck out eight in the game. Sean Kelly pitched 0.2 innings in relief and Clarke closed out the game with 1.1 innings on the hill allowing three hits without surrendering a run.

Daigle, Jr. led the Wolfpack at the plate going 2 for 4 with a run scored and two runs batted in on his first home run of the season. Ryan Scott and Chris May also had two hits each with Scott picking up the other Wolfpack RBI.

Taylor Domengeaux fired a complete game allowing all six runs on eight hits with four walks and five strikeouts. The loss dropped Domengeaux's record to 1-5 on the season.
