Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team shutout Tougaloo College 10-0 Wednesday night in non-conference action at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, pounded out 12 hits, stole eight bases, and did not commit any errors en route to their second win this week.
Belhaven (26-10) cracked the scoreboard in the first inning scoring two times against starting pitcher John Alford.
Tyler Wrinkle led off with a single and then picked up the first of two stolen bases in the game as he swiped second. Alford issued a walk to
Lake Eiland and then
Jimmy Gilford hit into a fielder's choice. Shortstop Dustin Porter putout Eiland at second on the play, but threw wildly to first base allowing Wrinkle to score the first run.
Paul Moreno drove in the second run with a base hit to right field that chased in Gilford to make it a 2-0 contest.
The Blazers added single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to extend the advantage to 5-0. Eiland produced an RBI double in the third to plate Wrinkle, who had singled and stole second base in front of Eiland.
Matt Discon came up with a two out RBI single in the fourth and then in the fifth Moreno singled with two outs, stole second base, and crossed the plate on a
Drew Dillard triple.
Belhaven doubled their run total in the bottom of the sixth scoring five times to put the game away. All of the runs in the inning came after two men were out. Wrinkle tripled to center field and scored on an Eiland single extending the lead to 6-0. Gilford followed Eiland's base hit with one of his own and then Moreno was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Dillard who walked to bring in the second run of the inning. Brewer proceeded to single in two more runs and
Alex Riser capped the inning with an RBI single to center field. Relief pitcher
Graham Upshaw slammed the door on the Tougaloo offense in the top of the seventh to put the 10 run rule into effect.
Belhaven was led at the dish by Wrinkle who went 3 for 4 including a double and a triple with three runs scored. Eiland went 2 for 3 with a double and two runs batted in followed by Moreno who collected two hits and one RBI. Dillard and Brewer ripped a hit and drove in two runs each. Riser and Discon each had base hits and an RBI while Gilford notched a hit and scored two runs. Wrinkle and Brewer had a pair of stolen bases while Eiland, Gilford, Moreno, and Discon all had one stolen base. Wrinkle leads the team in swiped bases with 11 this season. As a team, Belhaven picked up 12 hits and came up with them at key times in the game. The Blazers were 8 for 14 with two outs and 7 for 14 with runners in scoring position.
Mark Husband pitched six innings and earned the win improving his record to 2-1 this season. Husband gave up six hits, did not walk a batter and struck out one Bulldog hitter. Upshaw logged a scoreless seventh inning and picked up one strikeout.
Tougaloo (2-21) was paced by William Walker who slammed three hits in three at bats. One of Walker's hits was a double and on the season against Belhaven Walker is 5 for 7 at the plate. Shermain Page delivered two hits in three at-bats and Dustin Porter had Tougaloo's other hit in the contest. John Alford suffered the setback on the mound with 10 runs allowed on 12 hits. He walked four and struck out two in the loss that dropped his record to 0-5.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday at Smith-Wills Stadium when they take on Faulkner University in game one of a key Southern States Athletic Conference West Division three game series.
