Blazers Fall to NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State

Itta Bena, MS-The Belhaven baseball team lost at NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State University Wednesday afternoon 7-4. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Top 25 Poll, were held to eight hits while a five run fifth inning proved to be the difference for the Delta Devils propelling them to the win.

Belhaven (23-8) fell behind in the bottom of the second when Mississippi Valley State (8-14) struck for two runs off Blazer starter Mark Husband. Jon Neuberger singled to center field to plate Derek Wallace and then Chris Norman picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field to make it a 2-0 game. Belhaven picked up their first run in the third when Jordan Brewer doubled in Jimmy Gilford, who had doubled to begin the inning.

Leading 2-1, the Delta Devils exploded in the fourth inning scoring five runs on five hits. Chris Norman had an RBI double to right center, Jerry Hildreth had a two run double to right, Michael Lowe had a run scoring triple to right center, and Scott Hornstra double in the final run of the inning extending the lead to 7-1. Belhaven cut the deficit to 7-2 in the sixth inning as Lake Eiland lifted a sacrifice fly to center field plating Matt Discon, who had led off with a pinch hit single. Belhaven then picked up their final two runs in the ninth on a two run home run by Brewer that cleared the wall in right center field. It was his team leading third home run of the season and 10th and 11th runs batted in on the year.

Belhaven (23-8) was led by Jordan Brewer who went 2 for 4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Gilford collected two hits with a double and Alex Riser also slammed a pair of hits including a double for the Blazers. Husband (1-1) took the loss for Belhaven as he started and pitched 3.1 innings allowing five runs on five hits with two walks. John Patino worked 0.2 innings and was touched for two runs on three hits. Jordan Scott pitched well as he fired the final four innings and did not give up a run while allowing only one hit with two strikeouts.

Chris Norman had two runs batted in for Mississippi Valley State (8-14) and Jerry Hildreth had a hit and two RBI's. Matt Burton had two hits and two runs scored; Neuberger had a pair of hits and an RBI followed by Lowe with one hit and an RBI. Hornstra had two hits and a run batted in as well. As a team, the Delta Devils pounded nine hits with four doubles and a triple.

Steven Barnes (3-1) pitched the first five innings and notched the win giving up one run on four hits. The one was unearned and Barnes finished the game with two walks and two strikeouts. Ricky Hefflinger pitched two innings surrendering a run on three hits and Mark Kaplan worked two innings allowing two runs on one hit with two walks and two strikeouts.
