Blazers Stumble at Bethel

McKenzie, TN-It was a tough afternoon for the Belhaven baseball team losing at Bethel University by the final of 6-2. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, had their seven game winning streak snapped, were held to just two hits and struggled in the field with four errors.

Belhaven (19-6) never led in the game as Bethel (12-8-2) jumped out in the front scoring the first six runs until the Blazers plated their only runs in the top of the eighth inning. Bethel scored single runs in the second, third, fourth, and seventh innings and produced a pair of runs in the fifth.

In the eighth frame, Belhaven's Ryan Saunders walked to lead off the inning and then Tom Wertz made it to first on an error by Wildcat shortstop Tyler Roberson. With two outs and runners on first and second, leftfielder Jordan Brewer broke up Bethel pitcher Nick Purcell's no hit bid with an RBI double to center field sending home pinch runner Josiah Richard. Shortstop Lake Eiland followed with an infield single scoring Wertz for the second Blazer run of the game.

Brandon McHenry suffered the loss for Belhaven as he falls to 2-1 on the season. McHenry pitched six innings allowing five runs on eight hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Sean Kelly pitched one inning allowing one unearned run on one hit and Graham Upshaw tossed a scoreless inning with one hit and one walk allowed. Brewer paced the Blazers at the plate going one for one with his second double of the season. Eiland went 1 for 3 in the game with one run batted in.

Centerfielder Chris Cain was 2 for 3 for the Wildcats with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Leftfielder Jay Lowery also collected two hits and an RBI followed by catcher Billy Keck who launched a home run and had two runs batted in. Purcell (2-2) earned the win on the mound for Bethel tossing eight innings with two runs on two hits allowed. Purcell walked four batters and struck out 11 in Tuesday's game.

Belhaven will take the field again on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Union University (TN) for a non-conference matchup with the Bulldogs. The first pitch is slated for 2:00 PM and all the play-by-play action can be heard through Stretch Internet by clicking here.
