Blazers Sweep Three Game Series with LSU-Alexandria

Jackson, MS-The Belhaven baseball team completed a three game weekend series sweep of LSU-Alexandria on Saturday afternoon winning both games of a doubleheader at Smith-Wills Stadium. The Blazers, ranked 12th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, took game one of the day 6-5 and posted a 6-0 shutout in game two.

Game One
Belhaven (11-3) jumped on LSU-Alexandria early in game one scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning. Paul Moreno ripped a two run double down the right field line scoring Jimmy Gilford and Jordan Brewer who reached base with singles to start the frame. Lake Eiland then came in on a wild pitch and a Drew Dillard RBI double down the right field line chased home Moreno for the fourth run of the inning.

The Generals answered quickly in the top of the second scoring four times after two men were out. Stephen Laurent doubled home the first run of the inning followed by a two run single from Chase Barrett. LSUA tied the game when pitcher Brett Blaise threw a ball wide of first base on a pickoff attempt allowing Logan Lasseigne to cross home plate making it a 4-4 contest.

The Generals then took the lead in the top of the fourth as Lasseigne singled with two outs and Barrett brought him in on a double to make it 5-4. LSU-Alexandria maintained the lead until the bottom of the seventh when Belhaven got even at 5-5. General's pitcher Devin Evans had settled in since giving up the four runs in the first, but the Gilford and Eiland finally got to him again in the seventh. Gilford led things off with a triple and then Eiland plated him with a double to left field. Joey Johnson then came into pitch and kept the Blazers off the board sending the game into the eighth inning tied at 5-5.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Gilford walked saving an at bat for Eiland who lined a single to center field. Lasseigne, who had moved from shortstop to centerfield, misplayed the ball and it allowed Gilford to score giving the Blazers a 6-5 win. It was the second come from behind win of the week for the Blazers.

Blaise worked the first 4.1 innings for Belhaven and was charged with all five runs on seven hits. He walked four and struck out four and did not factor into the decision. Jon Patino ended up getting the win in relief as he silenced the LSUA offense for 3.2 innings surrendering only two hits while striking out five en route to his first victory of the season. Eiland went 3 for 4 at the plate in game one with one RBI and Gilford collected three hits and three runs scored. Moreno led the team in RBI's with two and had one of the Blazers four extra base hits with a double. Eiland and Dillard also had a double and Gilford blasted a triple.

Evans pitched the first six innings for the Generals and was responsible for the first five runs of the game. Evans gave up nine hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Johnson took the loss as he falls to 0-2 due to one unearned run in the eighth. He pitched a total of 1.2 innings giving up one hit while walking three and striking out one. Barrett paced the LSUA offense with two hits and three runs batted in. Lasseigne had two hits and two runs scored along with Cullen Vujnovich had a pair of hits for the Generals.

Game Two
Belhaven led all the way in the second game of the day scoring the first run in the bottom of the second inning. The Blazers loaded the bases with the aid of just one hit and courtesy runner Josiah Richard scored on a wild pitch by Ben Myers to make it a 1-0 game. Catcher Derek Tortorich had a one out single to get the ball rolling followed by a hit batsman, and Justin Hill reaching on a sacrifice fielder's choice.

The Blazers added two runs in the third on a two out two run double by Tortorich to straight away center field. The double sent home Brewer and Eiland who had both singled in front of Tortorich. Belhaven then put the game away in the bottom of the sixth with three insurance runs to make it 6-0. Gilford ripped his second triple of the day to bring home Dillon Berry for the innings first run. Eiland followed with a single to left field and then Dillard capped things off with an RBI single plating Eiland.

Belhaven starting pitcher Alan McHenry brought his A game and was nearly unhittable as he went the distance to earn his fourth win of the season. McHenry gave up just five hits and struck out two as he goes to 4-0 in 2011. More importantly he did not walk or hit any batters in the game.

Eiland had another big game at the plate collecting three more hits and another run batted in. Eiland combined to go 6 for 9 on the day and boosted his batting average to .327 for the season. Tortorich had two more hits and two runs batted in giving him eight RBI's this season. Gilford picked up a hit and his ninth RBI of the year and Dillard also chipped with a base hit and notched his team leading 16th RBI of the 2011 campaign. Brewer was the third Blazer to turn in a multi hit game with a pair of singles. Belhaven had 10 hits with two going for extra bases. The Blazers also had seven stolen bases as Wrinkle, Eiland, Dillard, Richard, Williamson, and Brewer swiped bases with Brewer picking up two steals in game two.

Meyer took the loss for LSU-Alexandria (3-8) in game two as he tossed the first three innings allowing three runs on four hits. Jake Bell pitched 2.1 innings in relief and was charged with the other three runs. Forrest Spillers made his first appearance of the season logging 0.2 innings. Tid Hilger and Stephen Laurent had a pair of hits to lead the Generals at the plate. Laurent had the only extra base hits racking up two doubles.
