Jackson, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team dropped their last regular season contest in Rugg Arena Thursday night against Spring Hill College in overtime 82-79. A poor shooting night was the nemesis for the Blazers who shot just 34.5% from the field connecting on 30 of their 87 total shots.
Belhaven (23-7, 10-2 SSAC) was led by
Jessica Barlow and
Regena Jackson who both turned in 16 points apiece.
Kiara Johnson tossed in 13 points on the night and tied Jackson for a team high six assists. Erika Leflore dropped in 12 points while
Portia Tucker snatched down a team and season high 20 rebounds in the contest. As a team, the Blazers out rebounded the Badgers 54-42 and forced them into committing 20 turnovers.
The Blazers outscored the Badgers in points in the paint 48-38 and came up with 18 points off of Badger turnovers. Belhaven outscored the Badgers in the first half of the contest 35-29 yet in the second half the Badgers put up 41 points to the Blazers 35. The Badgers finished the game off outscoring the Blazers 12-9 in the overtime period.
Spring Hill College (11-18, 2-9 SSAC) was led by Bria Bohanon with 26 points. Lynleigh Hughes turned in 12 points while Sha Sha Buchanan chipped in 10 points and a team high 16 rebounds. The Badgers shot 48.3% from the field and 62.9% from the free throw.
The contest began slowly with the first basket scored by the Badgers' Sha Sha Buchanan at the 17:47 mark. The Blazers got rolling with a basket by Erika Leflore with 12:44 in the half.
Sarah Carr then hit a three to give the Blazers an eight point lead 12-4. A steal and layup by Bria Bohanon cut the lead to three points with 10:21 to go in the first period and with 6:18 left Erika Leflore hit a layup to give the Blazers a ten point lead 25-15. Bria Bohanon then hit two free throws to close the half to cut the Blazers lead to six making the score 35-29.
Kimarie Bock opened up the second half with a jumper to cut the lead to four 35-31.
Regena Jackson scored the first basket of the second half for the Blazers with 18:13 making the score 37-35. Buchanan scored a basket a few seconds later tying the score at 3followed by a layup from
Windy Charles that gave the Blazers a three point lead with 14:59 to go. The Badgers then went on an 8-2 run to take an eight point 54-46 advantage with 11:36 left.
Jessica Barlow scored a layup to cut the lead to two 57-55 at the 8:15 mark, but the Badgers went on another 8-2 run to give themselves an eight point advantage with 4:14 left. With 1:41 remain in regulation,
Jackson scored a layup to give the Blazers a two point lead 70-68. Sha Sha Buchanan countered the Blazers score with one of her own to tie the score with 1:13. The Blazers had the ball with 29 seconds left from a Carr steal as Jackson took a shot for the win as time expired, but it was off the mark sending the game into an extra period.
The Badgers struck first in OT with a three pointer from Bohanon making the score 70-73. A Tucker layup cut it to one with 3:19 then Erica Wright hit a layup for the Badgers with 2:34 to go making the score 78-74. Jackson then hit a three cutting the lead to one with just 59 seconds left. Bohanon then hit one out of two free throws with 12 seconds left to give her team a three point advantage 82-79.
Jessica Barlow had a look with just two seconds left to tie the game up but her triple try three was off the mark giving the Badgers the win.
The Blazers are now 23-7 on the season and 10-2 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The Blazers will look to regroup as they head to Rome, GA for the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament. The Blazers are set to play on Thursday night as a number one seed from the SSAC West Division with their opponent yet to be determined.
