JACKSON, Miss- The Belhaven women's basketball team wrapped up day two of the Belhaven Holiday Classic with an impressive win over Louisiana State University at Shreveport 68-42. The Blazers went 2-0 in the classic defeating Southern Arkansas Thursday night 74-38.
Belhaven (11-4) had control of the contest early, opening the game with an 8-2 run at the 16:32 mark.
Regena Jackson hit a jumper to push the Blazers out in front by 11 with 11:42 to go. Jenifer Hicks knocked down a pair free throws for the Pilots to cut the Blazer lead down to five at 17-12. Jackson then hit back to back three pointers to give the Blazers a 15 point advantage with less than five minutes in the half. Christy Willis of LSUS (6-5) dropped in a three to shave the Blazer lead down to eight at 35-27 with 2:20 left. The Blazers scored two baskets to close out the half a jumper by

Portia Tucker pushing the edge to 12 at the halftime 39-27.
In the second half, Belhaven outscored the Pilots 29-15 to put the game away. A poor shooting percentage in the second half of 20% hindered the Pilots, preventing them from making a potential second half run to get back in the game. Belhaven's largest lead of the game was 26 points and it was 68-42, which proved to be the final score of the contest.
The Blazers had three players in double figure scoring, led by Jackson with 24 points and six rebounds. Senior
Portia Tucker dropped in 14 points and had a team high eight rebounds. Senior
Kiara Johnson turned in 12 points and a team best six assists. Sophomore Erika Leflore chipped in eight points while junior
Sarah Carr contributed seven points and six rebounds. The Blazers shot 41% from the floor and turned in a season best 88.9% from the free throw line. They also had 26 points off 22 LSUS turnovers and had 18 second chance points.
Jennifer Hicks led the Pilots on the offensive end with 12 points. Christy Willis sent in five points and grabbed three rebounds while four Pilot players added four points each in the contest. The Pilots shot 27% from the floor and made 82 percent of their free throws.
The Blazers will look to stay hot as they travel to Rome, GA to take on Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Shorter University on January 6, 2012. Game-time is slated for 4:30 PM.
