Blazers Overpower Southern Arkansas University

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven women's basketball team opened up the Belhaven Classic on Thursday night with a dominating win over NCAA II Southern Arkansas University by the final score of 74-38. The Blazers gained their 10th win of the season and take game one of their annual two day classic.

Belhaven (10-4) overpower the Muleriders from the opening tip of the contest and kept their foot on the accelerator the rest of the night. The Blazers saw an early 11 point lead within the opening five minutes of the contest and Belhaven continued to pile on the points. The Blazers were 20 of 32 shooting from the floor at 63% helping them to a 20 point lead with 8:35 left to play, followed by their largest lead in the half at 41 points with 28 seconds left. The Muleriders did manage to score a basket right before the halftime break cutting the Blazer lead to 39.

The second half mirrored the first as the Blazers stayed hot from the field. The Blazers opened up the second half with a 10-4 run increasing their lead to 46 points at the 15:15 mark. Keeping their momentum intact, the Belhaven enjoyed a 50 point lead which was the largest of the contest at the 7:22 mark. Southern Arkansas cut into the deficit towards the end of the game, shaving the Blazer lead down to 36 points with 41 seconds left in the game.

The Blazers dominated the Muleriders in most of the stat categories. Belhaven (10-4) won the points in the paint battle 54-18 and the Blazer bench outscored the Muleriders' bench 28-2. Belhaven forced Southern Arkansas into 33 turnovers which translated into 39 points. Belhaven shot 52% from the floor Thursday night and drained 64% of its free throws. Belhaven was led on the offensive end of the floor by senior Regena Jackson who had 12 points and four assists. Sophomore Erika Leflore clocked in 10 points followed by senior Kiara Johnson who chimed in with nine points, four assists and a game high four steals. Senior Portia Tucker tossed in eight points while three other Blazers all notched seven points apiece; junior Sarah Carr, senior Rachenia Powell and junior Ashley Wakefield.

Southern Arkansas (0-9) was paced by Kmaira Hobbs with 19 points and a game high eight rebounds. Following Hobbs was Shenelda Livingstonwith 11 points and six rebounds.

The Blazers will continue day two of the Belhaven Classic on Friday as they face LSU-Shreveport at 5:00 PM in Rugg Arena.
