Blazers Cruise Past Truett-McConnell College

JACKSON, Miss.- The Belhaven women's basketball team gained its ninth win of the season against Southern States Athletic Conference opponent Truett-McConnell 85-46 Saturday afternoon.   The Blazers had a solid weekend picking up two consecutive wins defeating Southern Wesleyan on Friday night by the final of 80-34.

Belhaven (9-4, SSAC 4-0) started the contest hot opening the game with an 11-6 run. The Blazers never looked back from that point on keeping the Bears from gaining any momentum in the contest.  At the 12:08 mark, the Blazers built a 10 point lead from a Portia Tucker field goal. With less than 7:00 left in the half, Tucker scored another layup to give the Blazers a 17 point lead. The Blazers saw their largest lead of the first half at 27 points with just two seconds showing on the clock. Ashley Wakefield drained a three making the halftime score 49-22.

The second half mirrored the first half, as the Bears never managed to get on track. The Blazers continued to pile on the points building their lead to 32 with just under 15 minutes left in the game. With less than five minutes in the game, Belhaven pushed their lead up to 41 off a pair of Christina Jaques free throws. The Blazers enjoyed their largest lead of the game at 44 when Wakefield knocked in a jumper with just 39 seconds left on the clock.

Four Blazer players turned in double digits in Saturday's contest. Regena Jackson led all scorers recording a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists. Portia Tucker also turned in a double-double with 14 points and a game high 11 rebounds. Ericka Leflore dumped in 10 points while Sarah Carr rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points of her own. Belhaven's defense did not allow Truett-McConnell a lead or a chance to tie the game at any point. They also forced 24 turnovers, which translated to 25 points. The Blazers shot 40% from the field and 74% from the charity stripe.

Truett-McConnell (1-11, SSAC 0-4) was paced by Kelsey Montgomery with 12 points and four rebounds. Symone Hampton chipped in 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. The Bears shot 28% from the floor and 48% from free throw line.

The Blazers will take a break for Christmas and be back in action in their 2011 Belhaven Classic. Belhaven will take on NCAA II Southern Arkansas University on day one of the classic on Thursday December 29th in Rugg Arena. Game time is slated for 5:00 PM.
