Blazers Tripped up by NCAA Division I Nicholls State

Box Score
THIBODAUX, La.-The Belhaven women's basketball team traveled to NCAA Division I Nicholls State University on Tuesday night and fell 78-60 to the Colonels. The Blazers, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, led by as many as six points in the first half, but couldn't keep pace with the Colonels who pulled away for the win.

Belhaven (7-4) came out strong in the first six minutes of the game building a 13-7 lead on a layup by junior Regena Jackson. The Blazers continued to maintain a six point edge with 13:13 left in the first half after junior Sarah Carr dialed up a triple. At that point, Nicholls State (5-5) countered with a 10-2 run that pushed the Colonels in front by two at 20-18 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. KK Babin hit the go ahead shot for two of her game high 27 points.

The game went back and forth over the next six minutes until late in the half when Nicholls State began to establish control of the game. With Belhaven leading 27-24, the Colonels closed the half with a 10-0 run to take a 34-27 lead and momentum into the locker room.

Nicholls State opened the second half by advancing the lead to 41-29 on a Jenny Nash three point shot with 17:18 remaining in the contest. However, Belhaven continued to fight and chiseled the deficit down to two points at 51-49 on another basket by Jackson with 10:24 left. Unfortunately, that's the closet the Blazers would get the rest of the way. The Colonels engineered a 12-4 scoring spurt which bumped the advantage back to double digits at 63-53with just under seven minutes on the clock. From there the Colonels kicked it in fifth gear and pulled away for the win.

Belhaven was led by Jackson who poured in a team high 24 points on 10 of 19 shooting from the field. Carr added 11 points and Jessica Barlow rounded out the double digit scorers with 10 points and a game high eight rebounds. Belhaven shot 38.2 percent from the field and had a hard time slowing down the Colonels who bagged 66.7 percent of their field goals, which was essentially the difference in the game. The Blazers defense forced 26 turnovers which translated to 24 points, but it wasn't enough to counter a hot shooting Colonels offense.

Nicholls State enjoyed a game high 27 points from KK Babin followed by Leslie Sumar's 19 points and Alisha Allen's 14 points. Four different players had five rebounds each and Nash led the team in assists with five. The Colonels had the upper hand on the boards 34-27.
