TOUGALOO, Miss.-The Belhaven women's basketball team suffered a 64-60 setback at cross town rival Tougaloo College Saturday night in a non-conference contest at Kroger Gymnasium. The Blazers, ranked 23rd in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, struggled to find the offense shooting 32.4 percent from the field and had an off night from behind the arc going 2 for 16. Belhaven came into the game ranked second in the NAIA in three point shooting at a 39.4 percent clip.
Belhaven (7-3) took the early advantage scoring 10 of the game's first 14 points to establish a 10-4 lead following a layup by senior
Portia Tucker off a fast break with 12:41 to go in the first half. Tougaloo (4-6) regrouped with a 10-2 run and grabbed the lead for the first time at 14-12 on a triple by Antonekia Williams with 9:52 on the first half clock. The Bulldogs maintained the lead for the rest of the period and took a 30-25 edge into the locker room at halftime.
The Blazers shifted back on top 33-32 two minutes into the second half thanks to a pair of free throws by senior
Regena Jackson. Unfortunately, the lead was short lived as Tougaloo regained moved back in front for good at 34-33 on an Erin Wells field goal with 17:26 to play. The Bulldogs would eventually go up by seven points 60-53 late in the game and were able to withstand one final charge by the Blazers. With just over four minutes to go, Belhaven kicked off a 7-0 run to tie the game at 60-60 on a layup by senior
Jessica Barlow when the clock hit 1:23. Victoria Jones put Tougaloo back on top 62-60 with a pair of free throws with 25 seconds left and those would prove to be the game winning points. Senior
Kiara Johnson's final shot attempt fell just short of the rim and then Tougaloo iced the game away with one second left on two more free throws which secured the 64-60 victory.
Belhaven was led by Barlow and Jackson who each fired in 14 points on the night. Jackson also added four assists and three steals while Barlow picked up a pair of blocked shots. Sophomore Ericka Leflore nearly had a double double on nine points and a team high 13 rebounds. As a team, Belhaven outrebounded Tougaloo 41-38 and both the Blazers and Bulldogs committed 18 turnovers.
Tougaloo had four players in double figures led by Portia Craft with a game high 21 points. Jones had a double double thanks to 13 points and 20 rebounds while Wells and Kiara Addison chipped in 11 points apiece. The Bulldogs made good on 34.9 percent of their field goal attempts (22-63) and converted 85 percent of their free throws (17-20).
Belhaven will return to action on Tuesday night as they travel to NCAA Division I Nicholls State University (LA). The tip-off is slated for 6:30 PM.
