Jackson, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season losing to 6th ranked Freed-Hardeman, 63-62 Tuesday night. The loss drops the Blazers season record to 7-1.
The Blazers were in control of the game until Freed-Hardeman put together a string of runs to notch the one point victory. Belhaven (7-1) came out hot on the offensive end shooting 57% (17-30) from the floor in the first half while only missing one three pointer which gave them an amazing three point percentage of 86% going 6-7 from downtown. The Blazers closed the first half out with a 9-4 run taking a commanding 14 point lead into the locker room at the break.
Early in the second half, the Blazers managed to stay hot pushing their lead to 17; the largest of the night with just under 16 minutes left in the contest. Freed-Hardeman (7-0) managed to claw their way back into the contest going on an 8-3 run cutting the Blazer advantage to three at 60-57 with just 1:35 remaining. With less than 40 seconds left to go, a Lion's steal led to a Blazer foul putting Natalie Shumpert at the line with just six seconds left on the clock. Jessica Barlow both chipped in eight points apiece. The Blazers forced the Lions into 19 turnovers which translated into 16 points. Belhaven also saw a team high nine blocks with
Portia Tucker leading the way with 3. Though the Blazers managed a 56% shooting from the floor in the first half, the second half didn't register the same impact shooting 28% from the floor resulting in a shooting percentage of 43% for the game.
Natalie Shumpert led the way for the Lions with 20 points. Maria Bagwell turned in a double- double with 12 points and 12 rebounds while Amber Alexander tossed in 11 points and had nine rebounds. The Lions shot 35% from the field and rounded in 81 percent of their free throws.
Belhaven will be back in action on Friday at the Tougaloo College Classic. The Blazers will face Freed-Hardeman University for 2nd straight contest. Game-time is slated for 6:00 PM.
