TROY, Ala.- The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated NCAA I Troy University on Tuesday Night in an exhibition contest by the final score of 56-53. The Blazers will remain at 7-0 on the year since the contest was as an exhibition, but the victory keeps the momentum going heading into the Thanksgiving break.
The Blazers got off to a slow start as the Trojans took a five point lead at 7-2 with 15:11 left in the first half. Senior guard
Kiara Johnson aided the Blazers in fighting their way back when she hit a layup to tie the game at 11 all at the 6:49 mark of the first half. The Blazers gained their first lead of the contest on a three pointer out of the hand of senior guard
Regena Jackson with 3:12 left to go in the half. Tenia Manuel hit a field goal for the Trojans with 1:35 left in the first half to make it a 21-20 game in favor of Belhaven. Neither team could score in the final 90 seconds as the Blazer maintained their one point edge going into the break.
In the opening minutes of the second half, Ieva Nagy scored a layup to put the Trojans up one 24-23. The Trojans then built on their lead extending it to a six point advantage from a Jamesha Blake jumper with 12:33 left to go. The Blazers then went on a 10-2 run to jump back into the lead by four with 10:32 left on the clock. At the 7:07 mark, DeAngela Sword hit a three locking the game up at 44 all. Jackson scored a layup to give the Blazers their largest lead of the game of eight, 54-46 at 3:09 mark. The Trojans cut the Blazers lead down to three points at 54-51 on a three pointer by Sophie Kleeman with 2:14 left. Jackson would eventually ice the contest for Belhaven with one second on the clock thanks to a pair of free throws.
The Blazers were paced by Jackson who led all scorers with 25 points and four steals. Trailing Jackson was Johnson with 11 points. Sophomore forward Erika Leflore and senior forward
Jessica Barlow both turned in eight points apiece while Leflore snatched 13 rebounds in the contest.
Belhaven (7-0, SSAC 2-0) managed to outscore the Trojans in both halves outscoring Troy in the first frame 21-20 and 35-33 in the second. The Blazers shot 30% from the floor and converted 76% of their attempts from the charity stripe.
DeAngela Sword led the Trojans in scoring with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Following Sword was Ieva Nagy with 10 points while Tenia Manuel chipped in nine points with 11 rebounds.
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday November 29, 2011 in Rugg Arena to take on Freed-Hardemen University. Game time is slated for 5:30 PM.
