JACKSON, Miss.-The Belhaven women's basketball team recorded a 64-57 win over Tougaloo College Saturday night in game two of the Coaches' versus Cancer Classic at Rugg Arena. The Blazers, ranked 25th in the NAIA Preseason Top 25 Poll, built a 12 point halftime lead and held off the Bulldogs in the second half for the victory.
The only time Belhaven trailed was in the opening minute when Tougaloo's Raven Ashley converted a free throw for the first point of the game.
Portia Tucker then tossed in a layup giving the Blazers a 2-1 lead that they would never relinquish. Belhaven (4-0) opened up a 12 point lead at 17-5 through the first eight minutes of the game as the defense wrecked havoc on the Tougaloo offense. Belhaven's largest lead of the night was 19 points at 32-19 with 3:45 to go in the first half following a field goal by Tucker. Tougaloo (1-3) then cut the lead down to 12 at the break scoring the final seven points of the half.
Early in the second half, the Blazers bumped their advantage up to 16 points at 38-22 with 17:38 showing on the clock.
Jessica Barlow registered the field goal and
Mycal Smith picked up the assist. Tougaloo eventually climbed back to within single digits at 44-35 on a triple by Antonekia Williams with 11:01 to play. However, Belhaven countered with a 7-0 run during the next two minutes which boosted the lead back up to 16 points at 51-35. The Blazers continued to maintain a double digit cushion until the final minute when Williams knocked down a three pointer for the Bulldogs with six seconds left.
Belhaven was led by
Regena Jackson with 23 points and five assists. In three games played this season, Jackson is averaging right at 23 points. Tucker added 13 points and a team high eight rebounds. Through the first four games, Tucker is second on the team in points per game with 17 and is tied for first with Jackson in rebounds per game at six. Ericka Leflore and
Sarah Carr each contributed eight points on the night. As a team, the Blazers made 40.4 percent of their field goals (23-57), 36.4 percent of their three point shots (4-11) and 70 percent of their attempts at the charity stripe (14-20).
Tougaloo (1-3) was led by Antonekia Williams with 15 points followed by Brianna Blunt with 11 points. Kristian Dobard and Victoria Jones finished the night with nine rebounds. The Belhaven defense limited Tougaloo to a 30.6 percent shooting night from the field (19-62).
Belhaven will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to Pensacola Christian University for a non-conference contest beginning at 5:30 PM.
