Jackson, MS- The Belhaven women's basketball team defeated the University of New Orleans Tuesday night in Rugg Arena by the final score of 88-36. The Blazers made it happen on the defensive end of the court forcing the Privateers into 25 turnovers and a shooting percentage of 26.5 from the field.
Belhaven (10-4) had four players in double figures on the night.
Kiara Johnson led the way for the Blazers with 16 points and a team high five steals.
Regena Jackson closely followed Johnson with 15 points and a team high nine assists just shy of a double-double.
Jessica Barlow and Wendy Charles both dropped in 12 points apiece while Erica Leflore was the team's leading rebounder with nine. As a team, the Blazers out rebounded the Privateers 48-28 and outscored UNO 52-18 in the paint.
The Blazers shot 57.1% from the field and managed to 28 points off of Privateer turnovers. Belhaven piled up nineteen steals on the night with nine different Blazers getting at least one. The Blazer defense prevented the Privateers from connecting on any three pointers; the Privateers went 0-10 from three point land.
The University of New Orleans (0-13) was led on the offensive end by Dinnelle Cormier with 12 points. Kendracia Valmont chipped in eight points while Tory Hearn turned in six points. Mirjam Sipos was the Privateers leading rebounder with seven and their leader in assists with four. The Privateers as a team forced the Blazers into seventeen turnovers, but weren't able to capitalize on their opportunities with a poor shooting night.
Belhaven came out strong shooting 58.1% from the floor in the first half accumulating 40 points to take a 20 point lead into the locker room at halftime 40-20. The Blazers continued to play well as they scored 48 points in the second half and held the Privateers to four less points than they scored in the first half leading to the final score of 88-36. The Blazer bench played a big role in the game outscoring the UNO bench 33-8. Wendy Charles was the leading scorer off the bench for the Blazers with twelve.
The win brings the Belhaven's season record to 10-4 and will be back in action on Saturday as they take on Xavier University (LA) in Rugg Arena. The tip-off is slated for 4:00 PM.
