Mobile, AL-The Belhaven women's basketball team used a strong second half to roll to a 76-54 win at Spring Hill College in a Southern States Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon. The Blazers, who received votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, outscored the Badgers 46-27 in the final period to notch their sixth straight win and 10th in their last 11 games. Belhaven now owns a game and a half lead in the SSAC West Division after Faulkner defeated the University of Mobile 86-81 leaving the Eagles and Rams in a tie for second in the league at 3-2.
Belhaven (17-5, 5-1 SSAC) was led on offense by
Regena Jackson who scored a game high 23 points and was perfect from the free throw line going nine for nine from the charity stripe. Jackson's 23 points is a season high and she has scored at least 11 points in every game played this year. Saturday's contest boosted here scoring average to 16.3 points per game in 2010-11. Erica Leflore also played well against the Badgers scoring 10 points while grabbing a team and game high 10 rebounds for her second double double of the season.
Sarah Carr chipped in with nine points for Belhaven with all nine being accounted for from three point land. Carr drilled three of her four attempts from behind the arc. Carr was ninth in the NAIA in three point baskets made with 55 and now has 58 three pointers on the season.
Kiara Johnson followed Carr with eight points and had two more steals giving her 82 on the season.
Jessica Barlow had a solid game along with Leflore on the boards pulling down eight rebounds with four on the offensive end of the floor. Barlow also dropped in six points in the win.
Belhaven made 43.3 percent of their field goals (29-67) and recorded the best game of the season from long distance dialing up 55.6 percent of their three point shots (5-9). The Blazers finished the afternoon converting 65 percent of their free throws (13-20). Belhaven dominated the paint once again scoring 44 points on high percentage shots while winning the rebounding battle 48-35. The Blazers also had 16 second chance points and nine points off of 18 Spring Hill turnovers.
Spring Hill (8-14, 1-4 SSAC) was paced by Kimarie Bock who scored 17 points and led the team with eight rebounds. Lynleigh Hughes added 12 points and Sha Sha Buchanan came up with nine points and five rebounds. Hughes also had a game high three blocked shots. The Blazer defense held the Badger offense to 32.7 percent shooting from the field (18-55) and Spring Hill could only knock down 15.4 percent of their triple tries (2-13). At the free throw line, the Badgers were 16 of 23 for 69.6 percent. Spring Hill tallied 28 of their points in the paint and had seven second chance points.
The first half went back and forth and featured seven ties and eight different lead changes in the opening 20 minutes. Belhaven owned the largest lead of the half and that was just six points 30-24 following a layup by
Portia Tucker with a minute remaining until the break. Spring Hill's largest advantage was four points 19-15 with just over eight minutes left in the first half. The key moment in the half came with 3:32 on the clock as Tucker would put Belhaven on top for good 26-24 with a basket in the lane that broke the final tie of the afternoon.
Leading 30-27 to begin the second half, the Blazers set the tone for the rest of the game in the first four minutes of the final frame thanks to a 12-4 run. The scoring run that was capped by a Leflore layup gave the Blazers their first double digit lead of the afternoon at 42-31. Spring Hill could not get within nine points the rest of the way as Belhaven continued to build their cushion throughout the rest of the contest. The Blazers largest lead of 26 points 72-46 was generated on a Wendy Charles bucket with 3:18 on the second half clock.
Belhaven will return to action on Wednesday night as they travel to Xavier University (LA) for a non-conference matchup beginning at 5:30 PM. The Blazers defeated Xavier 70-67 in overtime in the first meeting of the season at Rugg Arena on January 8th.
