Hattiesburg, MS-The Belhaven women's basketball team opened up a three game road swing with a convincing win at rival William Carey University in Southern States Athletic Conference action Thursday night. It was the Blazers sixth win in their last seven games as the team is off to one of its best starts in program history.
Belhaven (13-5, 2-1 SSAC) was led by
Sarah Carr who poured in 19 points and was red hot from the field knocking down 7 of her 11 field goal attempts. Carr was also dialed in Thursday night from behind the three point arc connecting on four of her seven triple tries. Three other Blazers landed in double figures as
Regena Jackson added 14 points followed by
Kiara Johnson and
Portia Tucker with 12 and 11 points respectively.
On the boards, it was Erica Leflore leading the way with six rebounds along with Jackson who had six rebounds and six assists. Johnson came up with four more steals and as a team Belhaven swiped the ball from William Carey 15 times in the contest. Leflore tallied three of those steals and couple of blocked shots against the Crusaders.
The Blazers had a solid night shooting the ball from the field delivering 48.1 percent of their shots through the net (26-54). Belhaven fired in 38.5 percent of their three pointers (5-13) and were effective at drawing fouls and getting to the free throw line where they knocked down 64.3 percent of their attempts (18-28). The Belhaven defense forced 18 turnovers and converted them into 22 points on the offensive end of the floor. The Blazers outrebounded William Carey 39-32 on the night.
William Carey (4-11, 0-3 SSAC) was led by Chelsea Combest with 19 points off the bench followed by Crystal Tucker who added 13 more points off the bench. Belhaven held the Crusaders starting five to just 16 total points in the game. Jerrika Williams and Shareka Hunt each had seven rebounds while Hope Swindle recorded a team high four assists.
The Crusaders were held to a 33.3 percent shooting clip from the field as they went 19 of 57 in the game. William Carey made 40 percent of their three pointers (6-15) and was 14 of 16 from the free throw line which equates to an 87.5 percentage. The Crusaders forced 14 Belhaven turnovers, came up with two blocked shots, and had four steals.
Belhaven got out to a bit of a slow start falling behind 4-0 in the first minute of the game, but the Blazers didn't stay down for long as they came roaring back with a 16-2 run to take a 16-6 edge with 13:13 remaining in the first half. With 9:14 remaining until the break,
Sarah Carr gave Belhaven their largest lead of the first half with a triple that made the score 25-11.
William Carey fought back to tie the score at 25 all on a three pointer by Kendria Hall, but the Blazers quickly countered on what may have been the biggest shot of the game.
Portia Tucker made her way into the lane and dropped in the basket to halt the Crusader run. Tucker's basket began what would be an 11-2 run to close the half and send Belhaven into the locker room with a 36-27 lead. From that point on, the Blazers never trailed nor would the game be tied the rest of the night. The second half belonged to the Blazers who eventually led by as many as 29 points in the second half. William Carey trimmed the deficit down late, but it wasn't enough to overtake the Blazers who went on for the 75-58 win.
Belhaven will be back in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Loyola University (LA) for another key SSAC contest in New Orleans starting at 3:00 PM. The Blazers trail the Wolfpack by a half game in the SSAC West division standings.
